Ranma had run down the street, yelling at his father that he wanted to get a cure, that he wanted.... A million and one other irrelevant things, from the perspective of Creation.
But that was the day that Ranma had run into a man who had not been there. At least. He had not been there a moment before.
As he charged down the street, full-tilt, a man was suddenly there; even with Ranma's reflexes, evasion was not possible. Even though he knew there should be better things to occupy his time than to stare at the man, he was transfixed. The man was taller than himself ... or his father. Ranma's eyes barely came up to his shoulder.
Long, straight brown hair, eyes that were hidden beneath a deep red blindfold, marked with runes and scrawlings that Ranma couldn't decipher. His robes were white, marked at the hems with small triangles of alternating red and gold, each of those framed in black runes. Beneath those robes, he wore a suit of some heavy chain, which sounded like chimes when Ranma found himself rebounding off the man-who-had-not-been-there.
"Oww," he said, picking himself up off the ground. Part of him wanted to yell at the fool for being in his way ... and another part of him sensed that this being, whatever it was, was not truly a man, and Ranma would do well not to anger him.
"Missapropriated," the man said after a moment, his covered eyes invisible behind his blindfold. His face did not turn in Ranma's direction, instead looking somewhat to his left. "And should not be here. I will return you ... and those whose fates you bind with. The mistake of eld will be repealed ... and we will rob the future to make the past brighter ... for what we learn and know will allow us to prevent great tragedies."
"What?" Ranma asked, dusting himself off, and glancing around for his father. But Genma was long gone ... and the street itself seemed different. Hazy, almost. Insubstantial. Like he was looking at it through heat shimmers.
As he watched, one of the shimmers became more pronounced, describing a circle. And then became more severe yet, warping and making Ranma want to look away from the effect ... yet leaving him unable to do so. And then that warping in reality tore, and through the hole, Ranma glimpsed a city that was not Nerima, with residents who were not Japanese. More than that refused to make itself known in his mind. "Uh ... what's going on?" he asked, turning to look at the blindfolded man again.
