The world was a dark place for Kenji Tsukino. In one terrible disaster, Kenji had lost everything, all because he was a good sport. Things had started innocently enough. Old Touga was retiring, and the office was holding an all night party to see him off. Kenji and his coworkers had taken a half day and started to celebrate early in a local bar. He couldn't quite remember who came up with the idea, but all of them agreed that Touga's party should be special, and their alcohol filled minds had settled on just the thing - a vixen popping out of a cake. A hat was quickly circulated.
Little money appeared in the hat.
Everyone was disappointed (although not enough to chip in more money) until Makoto came up with a great idea: one of them would use the money to get spliced. He'd volunteer his girlfriend's bathing suit; there wouldn't be a cake or a strip show, but Touga would get to see a sexy vixen, at least. Everyone agreed it was a wonderful idea. No one stepped forward to be the vixen, though. Finally, they drew straws. Kenji lost.
The party had been bad enough. Her coworkers leered at her, many who weren't in on the plan (or just extremely drunk) groped her and tried to back her into a corner or a side room. She didn't know if it was because she was a cosplay splice or she just never noticed was asses her associates were around women. She did resolve to be alert for things like that happening to the women in the office from then on. She also resolved to get the splice undone first thing the next day.
Sailor Uranus blew up the clinic that night.
When Kenji learned she was stuck as a vixen, she finished off all the alcohol left over from the party. Her life was over; she couldn't come home like this! Even if Ikuko accepted her, all the neighbors would know what happened. Her family would become outcasts, and she couldn't allow that to happen. Kenji called her wife, and managed to explain she wouldn't be returning home because she was now living as a vixen. It might not have been a very coherent speech, but Ikuko obviously got the gist of it - she hung up on Kenji in disgust at Kenji's carelessness, after all.
She would miss his children but, even if she hadn't changed into a vixen, what could Kenji offer them that their real mother could not?
Money? Kenji wasn't going to withhold money from her children just because she wasn't living with them. So they would be equally well provided for with Ikuko.
Time? Ikuko won that contest hands down. Kenji had to work long hours and wouldn't have much time for her children.
Love? Ikuko loved their children just as unconditionally as Kenji did. She would see that Usagi and Shingo were taken care of, no matter what happened to Kenji. Ikuko would make sure they were fed and had a roof over their heads and would comfort them when gossip about what Kenji had done started spreading.
No, as much as Kenji loved her children, they were better off with Ikuko.
And so the world was a dark place for Kenji Tsukino, one without the comfort of spouse, children, or even that of a familiar body.
