Jor El stood beside the ship, checking details.
"What is this, exactly?" asked Lara as she stepped past power conduits.
"You're familiar with the work that created the Phantom Zone," began Jor El.
"Well, yes," said Lara.
"Other dimensions exist beside our own in great number," said Jor El. "It occurred to me that a double-punch could send something from here through the Phantom Zone and into another universe beyond it."
"Something like your experiments with hyperspace travel," said Lara.
Jor El felt a great upswell of affection for his wife. Not everyone would have understood the concept so quickly. "Yes. The Phantom Zone itself is only a few microns thick for these purposes, not nearly large enough for someone interred in there to interfere. If I can do this while the automated processes complete Kal El's spaceship."
"You're not sending our son through to an alternate Krypton?" asked Lara.
"If this works out," said Jor El. "A crystal probe went through and landed on the Earth of that universe - but I lost contact with it after fifteen minutes."
Lara began to wonder why bother with just going to another Earth.
"If it works out, this can be our escape," said Jor-El. "We simply walk through the Gate."
Lara's eyes glistened. It was one thing to send their son onward because of the Science Council's decree, to have their son survive when they themselves were dead. Quite another if they could all escape without breaking the edict against space travel.
"I just need to make sure it's safe, as the probe did cut off abruptly," said Jor El. "The puppies. One of them will do."
Lara frowned, not liking the idea of the sacrifice, but as they were all doomed to die anyway it was a little less distasteful. "They were all engineered for superior intelligence and friendliness, minor psychic abilities. The smallest one seems the most intelligent of the group."
"Then that's the one we'll use," agreed Jor El.
A small ground-quake punctuated the need and the small fellow was prepared and sent through.
A stronger ground-quake caused power relays to fail and the opening to close.
When Jor El finally re-established the gateway, it showed an entirely different world than the one Krypto had gone to.
"His name is Krypto," said Ranma.
"Stupid name for a lunch item," grumbled Genma.
"I'm gonna teach him martial arts!" proudly declared Ranma.
"Stupid idea for a lunch item," grumbled Genma.
"He's a ninja dog!" declared Ranma. "Watch this! STAY!"
"That's a stupid..." Genma's voice trailed off as he realized that the dog WAS staying put. Standing at a ninety degree angle from the ground on a wall. Genma watched as a little drool escaped the dog's grinning mouth and travelled straight down to where it wet the sidewalk. "...ninja dog eh? I'll make sure he knows how to disappear later."
"What do you mean?" asked little Ranma.
"Nevermind," said Genma, thinking about all sorts of recipe for dog.
It was a daily game.
Big fat one would try to catch him. He would then use his speed, strength, and superior intellect to make a fool of big fat one.
Then Krypto would go on with the rest of the day being a proper "ninja dog" and doing ninja things.
When school let out, he'd be waiting for Ranma and go play for hours straight in this "martial arts training" play.
