At first, he had thought that what they had set up was working. They had the boy all set up to be finally joined with his little girl. Just when things seemed to be completely set, they had fallen apart.
Waking up in that situation had been the first indication that their plans had gone terribly wrong. Seeing Nodoka seeing the aftermath of what had happened had just completely and absolutely told him that his life was about to flash before his eyes.
Once he had managed to get away from Nodoka's chase of Genma, and figured it was safe, he had returned to his home only to find that his daughter's fiancee was gone, and one of his other daughters had vanished as well.
