Screams and the sound of breaking wood caught the attention of the two. The two jumped to their feet, moving to the door. "What could be—?!" demanded Kaede, but was interrupted as a horse with a good chunk of its flank missing landed dead at Kagome's feet.
"Sorry. I don't really care for horsemeat," said Kagome, almost before she realized what she was saying. She kicked herself for it.
Kagome looked up at the shape rising above the village roofs. The long body had at its head a woman's torso. A string of raw horse flesh hung from the mouth of the creature, the teeth more like an insect than anything else. Kagome recognized it as the centipede-lady from the well. The thing's beady eyes swiveled to Kagome, and the recognition was mutual.
"GiVE mE The SHIkon nO TAma!" growled the creature.
"The jewel!?!" exclaimed Kaede, staring at Kagome. "You have the jewel?!"
"I... I'm not sure..." answered Kagome. That thing is only after me! But unless I lead it away, everyone else is going to die! But if I lure it away, I can then fight it on my own terms! With that thought in her head, Kagome prepared to rush off.
"Neither spear nor arrow stops it!" despaired one of the villagers.
"If we can lure it to the dry old well, we might trap it!" Kaede declared.
"Dry old well?" asked the marionette.
"In Inuyasha's forest!" Kaede answered.
"Where is that forest?"
"East, toward..."
The marionette looked toward the east and found the rising forest aglow with light. "Toward that light?" completed Kagome, rushing off toward the glow. "Got it!" Kagome kept her speed to normal human levels, not wanting to lose the creature at her full 330 km/h sprint.
The centipede-lady spotted Kagome rushing off. "You WILl noT SLip mE!" snarled the creature, rushing off after her.
Don't worry, bug-lady! thought Kagome, I'm not planning to!
As Kaede watched the girl and centipede creature rush off toward Inuyasha's forest, she mused, "Did that child say that she could see a light? She saw the evil aura of the forest, something no earthly being can see!"
