"She's so small..." commented the first engineer, leaning over the worktable. It had on it a work-in-progress, a small marionette without arms and only one leg.
The second engineer chuckled. "She can still break you in half! This model was based on one designed to work in cramped areas like ducts, or where an adult-sized model would weigh too much, hence her small size and light weight. However, we have upgraded her strength... we reduced her weight-to-power ratio by fifteen percent," said this engineer. "She can't go toe-to-toe with our little lost lambs, but we've equipped her with an advanced strategic/tactical suite. That should even the odds, in case they're reluctant to come back."
"What about their phantom-light drives?"
The second engineer held up a complicated-looking module. "That's where this phantom-light jammer comes in. It's basically a phantom-light drive built without concerns for stabilization. It therefore makes the use of phantom-light drives difficult while this is in operation. It also makes it much smaller." With that, the engineer slid the unit into a waiting compartment, bolted it down, and started connecting the cables. "Meanwhile, you can install that maiden circuit prototype."
The first engineer picked up a round component about the diameter of a hockey puck, as thick as a 500-page book, and with a greenish crystal orb embedded in its center. "I thought only three existed in Japoness..." quipped the engineer as he carefully placed it in its receptacle.
"That particular unit showed some irregularities in its growth," explained the second engineer as he was putting the finishing touches on the phantom-light jammer. "The marionette developed a real nasty streak, as well as megalomania. She started plotting to take over Terra II about two hundred years ago. Very nearly succeeded, too."
The first engineer stared at the greenish crystal with concern. "You think we should really let loose such an unstable circuit onto Old Earth?" he asked.
"Who cares. It won't affect us!" said the second dismissively.
