By pursuing control of it himself, Ranma was inclined to stop being a victim.
This was pretty much something that the Genie approved of. The first step to being a hero was to change roles. The little farmer who bore a Ring Of Power to a distant land. The street rat to become the consort of a princess. The blacksmith's son who became a mighty wizard. Few set out to be a hero, they simply made a necessary choice when it came to them and went beyond the role life had initially cast for them.
Ryoga had learned the Shishi Hokoudan from a miner. There were styles like Martial Arts Calligraphy around, showing that there were many Arts arising over the centuries with their own special manuevers and limitations. That there were other Arts was a given, what they were - another story.
These things were understood by Ranma for perhaps the first time in his life.
There were scrolls and bamboo slats engraved with symbols. Ancient manuscripts and lithographs. Even cave paintings. The world was far older than the Amazon Village, and fighting had been around during most of it.
All of which meant that he could become a truly distinguished martial artist if he applied himself. What of the legendary places, locations hidden from modern man by age and the certainty that such things were myth? What sort of fighting arts might be found in Shangri-La? What special manuevers had the inhabitants of Pellucidar or Skartaris come up with over the ages? What sort of fighting styles might have arisen in the Court Of Prestor John, or in the fields of Xanadu?
Ranma leapt to the top of the fence, walked along it briefly, then went to the roof. Things were quiet, so he very likely could go in without problem. Ah, there went the slamming of an interior door. Problem detected. Nope, roof was fine for now.
So Ranma lay back on the roof, contemplating the clouds move overhead, and:
