"That's weird," Yugi said as he and his group, along with Davis and TK, entered Castle Gaktoa. "There's no one here at all. Maybe we have the wrong address."
"I doubt that," Kaiba said, "Though you're right about it being weird that there's not a bus boy, or even a desk clerk to greet us."
Mai shook her head. "This is a castle, not a hotel, boys. The owner was gracious enough to let us stay here for the trip, so don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Besides, this is a huge place, he must be on the other side of the castle."
TK let out a low whistle as he looked around. "You're right about the size of here, Mai. Just look at this main hall."
"TRAIN LEAVING ON TRACK FOUR; ALL ABOARD-!"
Jounochi was cut off as Davis had elbowed him hard in the ribs. "Knock it off," Davis grumbled, "what's wrong with you?"
"Davis," TK scolded, "that was uncalled for! These guys did save us and were kind enough to bring us along to the castle."
"I told you, TC, I wanted to look for Kari! We should have stayed at the airport."
Anzu shook her head. She had to put up with Davis's whining during the cab ride, and now he was starting up again. "Will you PLEASE calm down about your friend?! She may be on her way here right now."
Before Davis could snap back at Anzu, Yugi let out a loud cry. "HELLO? ANYBODY HOME?" They all paused, straining to hear a reply. However, they only heard silence.
Kaiba then started towards the front desk. "There's a check-in book at the desk. Let's sign in, and maybe somebody will show up."
The group thought this was a good idea and followed Kaiba, Davis dragging behind. They took turns signing their names in the book, but when they finished, still no one appeared.
Jounochi then smiled before he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a deck of cards. "Well, since we're waiting, how about a few rounds of Duel Monsters? I didn't bring my Duel Disk with me, but we could still play the game the old-fashioned way. You game, Yugi?"
Yugi sadly shook his head. "Sorry, Jounochi. I wanted to take a break, so I left my cards back with Grandpa, save for the God Cards. Even the Spirit of my Millenium Puzzle thought it was a good idea to leave my deck behind."
Even I need a vacation, Yami added mentally.
Jounochi turned to Mai, who also shook her head. "I'm taking a long breather from the game, too." she said, not waiting for Jounochi to say anything.
Jounochi was a little hurt, though he couldn't blame either of his friends. After the events of Battle City and the Doma Incident, who wouldn't want to stop playing Duel Monsters for a while? He turned to Kaiba, his last hope, though he wouldn't openly admit it. "Kaiba, you always carry your cards with you-."
"Not this time," Kaiba said, "though I'd be only happy to beat you again if I had my cards with me. I remade my vow not to duel anymore until after Kaiba Land is complete."
"But you said you were almost done days before we came here!"
Reaching into his jacket pocket, Kaiba pulled out a personal organizer and checked it. "I said we finished construction early, but the installation and testing of the systems will still take a while. Plus even if things go smoothly, the grand opening date is set in stone so I can't change it even if we finish early. I estimate it'll be... one month, two weeks and six days, come Friday."
"And we never played the game," TK said.
Davis scowled. "I had some cards, but my older sister threw them all away after I got rid of her pile of unsent love letters to TJ's brother."
Anzu watched Jounochi as he hung his head. Suddenly, she remembered that she had brought her deck with her. Opening her bag, she pulled out her deck. "I brought my deck, Jounochi. You can duel me."
All eyes were now on Anzu, most of them were looks of utter shock. "What? I've played the game before, you know! Like before Duelist Kingdom, and during our battle with Noa and the Big Five. Plus, I got some new cards and had some help restructuring my deck thanks to Yugi's Grandpa."
Yugi blinked. "Kaiba leaves his deck behind, and Anzu brings hers?"
Jounochi rubbed his chin. "Yugi, you think this is a sign of the end of the world?"
"YOUR end, maybe," Kaiba growled, grabbing Jounochi in a chokehold, "if you don't cut the jokes!"
Mai gave Anzu a sly look. "Thinking of taking me on in a rematch, eh, Anzu?"
"Well, maybe. But mostly to try my luck against Yugi."
Jounochi managed to break away from Kaiba, and then waved a hand at Anzu. "Forgive me, Anzu, but I'll decline your offer. I'm not the same loser you played against before. I've changed a lot since Duelist Kingdom, and I doubt you'd be able to defeat me in a duel-."
Steam blowing out her ears, a red-faced Anzu grabbed Jounochi by the collar. "Just try me," she said, sounding almost like a goddess scorned, "IF you're not afraid to lose to a girl!"
Davis groaned loudly, sinking into a nearby chair. "Kari, where are you?!"
