"I see," said Ranma. "In that case I'm sorry that I've taken your time. Thank you for the tea."
Tsuruko held a hand up. "That does not preclude you from learning something of our techniques."
"But you just said..." Ranma began, his voice trailing off in puzzlement.
"If you were to stay here for a time and observe, then continue on your journey, that is certainly permissable," continued Tsuruko, almost smirking at the hiss of drawn breath coming from just outside the door to the meeting room.
"Ah," said Ranma, understanding now. The style was a family thing, and therefore tradition might forbid the teaching of outsiders. Yet those within the school were dedicated to vanquishing evil and allowing such forces to thrive unchallenged would also be something against their core principles.
Hence this compromise, Ranma realized. They might not be able to actively teach him, but they could continue to practice and hone their skills in his presence - thereby allowing him to learn indirectly.
Tsuruko looked over the young man with a practiced eye, not mentioning another possibility she was still pondering. Engage this young man to Motoko and he could be trained in the style. This could be interesting.
