Ranma entered the room with her hand feeling the horns on her temple and the third eye was twitching violently. All three eyes focussed on Akane then flicked to Nabiki's golden skin. "What the heck's going on?" she demanded. After a hasty repeated explanation by the tranformed trio, she calmed down and grasped the important part. "No way! If I'm not sick any more, my curse should be unlocked!" she asserted and with a hopeful demand, "right?"
"Of course, Boy," Genma agreed as he appeared with a boiling kettle in hand. "All we have to do is ... arrrrhhhh!"
Genma stood in a state of shock. Boiling hot water poured over Oni-Ranma without any reaction. She didn't feel the heat and she didn't transform. Her three eyes opened wide as she stared at herself. She had only, barely, tollerated being stuck during the flu by telling herself that it would pass. Now that she was supposed to be hale and whole... she was beyond annoyed.
Soun started blubbering and Genma continued pouring the now empty kettle. Nabiki reached out with a golden hand and pushed. Genma toppled backwards, frozen in his state of shock. "Those two are going to be useless for a while," she observed. She then slapped Ranma, resulting in a loud metalic clang, "Ranma, snap out of it. You're not the only one transformed, you know."
"Right," she agreed. "Whoever's responsible is going to pay!"
"What are you looking at me for?" Akane demaned but steped back from that three-eyed glare. Ranma's eyes seemed to shine with an inner glow that had nothing to do with a battle aura. "I'm sorry my flu caused this, but it wasn't my fault!"
"The flu did this," Ranma agreed. "We all caught it off you, but where did you catch it?"
"I don't know," Akane snapped back. "I haven't been anywhere... different..." She paused and considered. "I came down with the flu after the school trip."
"To the Antique Jeans research labs!" Ranma cried, revealing who hadn't been paying quite as much attention on the field trip as she pretended.
"But why would it strike Akane before the rest of the class?" Kasumi wondered. "Surely everyone on the trip would have been exposed at the same time?"
"Oh, yeah," Ranma deflated. "It's not like Akane wandered off on her own or... hey!"
"It was only for a few minutes," Akane countered.
"Even if she was exposed there," Nabiki added, "we don't have any proof, or any idea who was behind it. What were you going to do, Ranma, beat up on some geeks?"
"No, I, er," Ranma replied lamely. "Ah, yeah, kinda..."
"Forget about it, Ranma," Nabiki advised. "Solving crimes of this nature is not your forte. This has to be handled quietly. We don't want any super powered weirdos deciding to blame us for spreading the infection, do we? An anonymous letter or two to the police, and the press, should make someone investigate, if they aren't already. Best leave it to them."
"I guess," resigned Ranma in an unconvinced kind of tone. "So this kind of things been happening all over Nerima?"
"Oh, yes," Kasumi nodded. "And beyond. Girls all across Tokyo are coming down with a the fever. Those who've recovered here in Nerima have woken up... well, changed. There was one poor girl on the news who... whose..." Kasumi broke off with a shudder. "We... you all got off relatively lightly."
"Lightly!?" Ranma demanded with a slight note of rising panic. "I'm stuck as a girl with horns and an extra eye! You call that lightly?"
"Yeah, Ranma, it is," the Nabiki snapped. "At least you still look mostly human. Look at me an' Akane."
"Yeah, but I'm a guy!" Ranma insisted.
"You're a girl," Nabiki smirked. "You may as well get used to it. At least you're still pretty cute."
"Leave her alone, Nabiki!" Akane leaped to Ranma's defense. "It can't be easy for her... him... uhm..."
"I'm going out to train," Ranma declaired suddenly, falling back on the comfort of martial arts. "Last thing I need is to have lost condition while sick."
"Oh, Ranma," Akane muttered as she watched her retreating form. She felt sorry for her -er, him- and partly guilty. She stood up and followed her former fiancé, now fiancée, out to the dojo. Her usual anger at being dismissed was pushed aside for the moment; this was time to show her sweet side.
Cue a touching, warm-fuzzy moment which ...
