Alternate Evangelion: There's Got To Be A Better Way! [Episode 130829]

by Loki-L

"We agreed that sacrifices would have to be made!" Kyôko told her friend and colleague.

"Yes, but that was before we learned of the full extend of these sacrifices," Yui answered her, "I am willing to give my live if it is necessary to save mankind, but if this is true then 2nd Impact was no accident. They killed all those people just to advance their plans and we can't even be sure anymore that those plans include saving mankind instead of just apotheosis for a few chosen."

Yui Ikari and Kyôko Sôryu Zeppelin had come across the horrible truth only by accident

The young daughter of doctor Akagi had been playing unsupervised on one of the access terminals and somehow managed to crack the security for the documents that nobody outside the inner circle of SEELE was supposed to see.

They had found the girl while she was reading those documents. She likely had not understood what they meant, but Yui and Kyôko did and it had changed everything.

"And what are we supposed to do?" Kyoko demanded, "We could not stop them if we wanted to. We are just two women alone against the most powerful conspiracy in the world. We couldn't even trust our own families if we tried to work against SEELE."

It was true both the Zeppelins and the Ikaris had been part of the conspiracy that would eventually become SEELE for generations. Several of their relatives were likely to have known and approved of the Second Impact before it happened. And Yui had a very nasty suspicion about just where Naoko's daughter might have picked up of the password she had used to open these files..

She did not know what thought should frighten her more. That her own husband was involved in this or that he was cheating on her with Naoko.

"We have to do something," Yui argued, "we are both key-scientist in the Evangelion project, between the two of us we could make alterations to it that would prevent them from sacrificing what is left of the human race on the altar of their ascension."

"We would have to replace the angel DNA with something else to prevent their scheme, but if we sabotage Evangelion mankind will be just as dead at the hand of the angels as it would have been at the hands of SEELE." Kyôko pointed out.

"Besides," she added more softly, "by the time that those things become an issue we might very well both be dead already. We would have to somehow manipulate events from beyond the grave."

Yui looked down at herself. She did not yet show, but she was pregnant. They both were. And there had already been talk of their children some day being among the pilots of the Evangelion units.

Yui had been proud, her little Rei (or Shinji if it was a boy) would one day be instrumental in the culmination of the work of generations of Ikaris had done save mankind. It would not even matter if she did not live to see the day in person.

But now it looked like their children would be tools to achieve the ends of SEELE.

"I will not let use my child like a tool or let it become a puppet of SEELE." Kyôko vowed hotly.

The German-Japanese woman hat always had something of a temper and with the onset of pregnancy her mood swings had become even worse.

"We could do something," Yui tried to shift back the topic," We could construct the EVAs without Angel DNA. We would have to replace the it with something similar powerful so that they will stand a chance against the Angels. But it could be done."

Kyôko considered this for a moment.

"The angel-eggs!" She suddenly exclaimed," Those artefacts we recovered from that temple in the ruins of Tokyo. They had a pattern-color very similar to that of an angel. We called them angel-eggs because we thought that they might grow into angel-like entities under the right conditions. They appeared to be symbionts of some sort, but far to powerful to bond with a human directly."

"We know very little about their origin and capabilities," Yui cautioned, "but we might not have a better choice."

"There also are those tissue samples from that arctic expedition. We still are not quite sure what they saw. Urban legends from Juban fighting demons at the north pole? But the samples they claimed to have recovered from the corpses showed some remarkable properties and we could use the genetic material to patch the genetic code of the EVA-bodies." Kyoko made another suggestion.

"That might work," Yui acknowledged, "but we might also consider a more drastic departure from the original Evangelion plan. The xeno-technology that the American branch recovered after the Mount St.Hilary eruption for example might be used to build mecha capable of fighting the angels without the need to rely on angel-material."

"There might be a problem with controlling the mecha though." Kyoko said after considering the suggestion, "That was the reason why we never tried to reactivate any of the machines. They had incredible complex AI and nobody was sure what was in their original programming. We would have to make sure that a human pilot could control them by completely bypassing the main central processing unit. And it would also be hard to smuggle such a major departure by the rest of the scientist. We would almost have to stage some kind of coup or something. And if we are already discussing totally unrealistic plans we might as well consider enlisting the help of Doctor Münchhausen."

"No, absolutely not!" Yui objected vigorously, "that man is crazy!"

"Oh come on he is the sanest and most ethical man in his family for many generations." Kyôko tried to reassure her. "He has made great progress in reconstructing the research of his ancestors and turning it into something positive. I think he tries to atone for the sins of his family."

"He is completely mad," Yui insisted, "don't you remember back in our University days when he was looking for volunteers to ride that perverted carousel of his?"

"You shouldn't have double dared me," Kyôko harumphed," But his area of research is the only source of technology we have were we actually could be sure of the effects. We might not like what it does but at least we would not be completely flying blind as we would when using some complete unknown."

Yui did not want to agree so she changed the topic.

"We also might try a completely different approach," she said," instead of making changes to the eva we might give our children something extra. They could need an ace or two up their sleeves when the final confrontation comes. SEELE has absorbed several rival eschatological conspiracies during the last few decades. There were several interesting bits recovered from the Grail after it was almost completely destroyed at Alamo."

"They were the ones responsible for monument valley weren't they?" Kyôko recalled. "If we could enhance the pilots with some of the things that destroyed the Grail it would be a good protection for them. Who could use a child like a puppet that speaks with the word of God?"

"It might just work," Yui conceded, "all the plans are risky but we have to try. Not just for ourselves and for our children, but for all the children of the world."

"Yes, "Kyôko agreed solemnly, "we have to try for children like little Ritsuko here as much as for our own salvation."

They eventually decided on a plan of action, that would result in a slightly different Evangelion project 14 years down the road.
