Then, the pain started.
For an eternal moment, nothing mattered other than the phantom pain being transmitted from her Eva. Even as the jaws of her Evangelion opened in a tortured scream, Asuka felt nothing but the pain of having a body not her ripped into pieces. She never heard Shinji's terrified screams or anything else, for that matter, as she started to die from both shock and soon, the destruction of her plug.
Deep in her mind, she kept on thinking that it couldn't end like this. That she can't be killed when she was so close to... she couldn't remember what, but it was so close!
"Asuka..."
"Mama?"
"Shh... it'll be alright..."
"But, mama! It can't end like this! I never had the chance... We never had any chance to BE anything!"
"... Is it really so important to you?"
"... I never even knew you."
"Alright."
Even without eyes, Asuka saw a bright flash of light. Perhaps it was her Eva exploding, or her body contacting the wave from the Third Impact. Either way, her final thought before fading away was that this must be how someone goes to heaven.
Too bad she was wrong.
A sharp pain brought her back to consciousness. Slight tremors shook whatever it was she laid upon, while the sounds of people shouting and moving her finally filtered through her mind.
She felt herself move and say something when a large impact shook and caused her body to fall to the ground, a resounding pain that brought everything into focus: Shinji - it had to be him; was running towards her. She spared a moment to glance up at the steel bars and rubble falling at her and thought, 'So this is it again?' before the impossible happened.
A giant purple hand suddenly interposed itself between the falling building materials, protecting her and Shinji from danger. For a moment, silence and sirens reigned the area. Everyone was looking at the hand and empty plug - then Ritsuko was saying how impossible it was and Shinji was agreeing to pilot and Asuka wanted to just hug Shinji for being alive and there and that it's not Third Impact...
...Then Asuka found that she didn't really have much control over her body.
Her first reaction was panic. Then fear. Then anger at what must be a cosmic joke when she felt something. Or rather, an emotion that can be easily defined with a: "?"
It was then that she felt it. It's just like synchronizing with an Eva: The more you concentration outside of 'yourself', the more you get from the 'other'. It was then that she got a clear look of of where she is... and on a plane of glass across the hallway, her reflection in the image of Ayanami Rei.
