"Rei, come along now," demanded Ranma.
"I shall not," said the pale maid.
Froderick hmphed. "Your devoted maids it seems to me, have their minds made up implicitly."
"Asuka?" tried Ranma.
"Nein," said Asuka.
"Maya?" tried Ranma without much hope.
"Not stupid, not expendable, not going," indicated the third of the maids cornered in the room.
Ranma scratched his head. "Okay, this is a direct order. You WILL let Javan's Restorative be cast on you."
"That sounds most unpleasant," said Rei.
"Actually," put in Garson, "it's just a spell that removes curses and similar influences. It might cure your amnesia."
"That is exactly the unpleasant part," said Rei.
"That's it," said Froderick. "Slipped my wit."
"Hah?" said Ranma, feeling the situation was out of his control. Which was pretty accurate if belated.
"What Wondergirl here relayed to us is simple, and you're overlooking is clear," said Asuka. "If it was bad enough for us to block it all out, using magic to fix the amnesia is just asking for trouble."
"Hmmm, I see," admitted Garson. "Still, we have to see. We have to know. Otherwise no one will be able to use this spell again."
The three maids looked at each other, fear plainly visible in two sets of eyes and severe concern in the third. Which for Rei was practically a fit in and of itself.
"I have been here the longest," said Rei finally. "If we must, leave Asuka and Maya out and simply try the experiment on me."
The spell was quickly done, the supplies on hand. The only real problem was sculpting the cloud of magic into a corkscrew shape with seven passes of the wizard's athame.
Garson did the spellwork with Froderick and his apprentice Ranma present. The two maids, hardly mindless servitors, were merely ready and in the background for whatever happened. Rei sat in the chair, her eyes shut as she tried to prepare for whatever was going to happen.
The spell ended. There was a moment of silence as Rei opened her eyes.
And screamed. And screamed. And thrashed about despite Ranma now trying to hold her in place, her eyes bulging as this pure noise poured out.
"HOLD ONTO HER!"
"WHAT THE ______ DO YA THINK I'M DOING?!" shouted back Ranma.
Garson began casting another spell, moving quickly.
There was a sickening crack as Rei broke her own arm trying to get out of Ranma's grip, the shriek ending only because her voice had gone.
Asuka and Maya fled, this sufficient indication to them that their past should remain buried.
"Sleep!" commanded Garson, jabbing fingers at Rei's forehead.
Rei lunged, catching the two extended fingers and severing them with her teeth.
Froderick was briefly in shock but put spell together and threw a pinch of sand at the deranged girl. Rei's eyes rolled up immediately and she bonelessly slumped in Ranma's grip.
"DAMN!" said Ranma with some feeling, rubbing at sore muscles.
"Tell me about it," said Garson, clutching his wounded hand.
"Madness consumed her - that it did," said Froderick. "Undo what was done, let the past again be hid."
