The Guard Captain just stared at the couple presenting themselves before him. As if he didn't have enough problems, having lost seven men to some kind of monster attack earlier that day. He personally wondered about the peasants sometimes... claiming it was a vampire of all things. It was the middle of the day, water didn't burn it, it sure as Hell wasn't a Vampire. And, of course, two gypsies got involved in the mess as well, and now they were threatening to curse people if the monster wasn't found for their revenge.
And now this madness.
"Look, goodfolk, that's no wise man on that hill... he's a raving lunatic, he is!"
"Nonetheless, we intend to see him," the man replied. He was a nondescript man, very plain, in fact, carrying with him a long walking stick. Next to him stood a fair woman in a rugged travel dress. Although she kept her hood on, what the captain had seen of her made him wish to ask if the woman was the man's wife, or sister, and desperately hope for the latter.
At least, until their destination became clear. "I'm telling you, it isn't safe! I've seen many pilgrims like yourselves gone into that accursed place... and not a one of them's ever returned! And the sun's already setting! You need more than a single staff to walk around these parts during the day, travelers! At night, it would be suicide!"
"I'm sorry, Captain," the man said again, "but I must insist. We have traveled a very long way to see him, and cannot wait for the dawn."
The guard captain just shook his head at their foolishness. "I tried, I did. Can't say you weren't warned." He turned and pulled the large lever behind him, starting the old machinery that would open the gate toward Nupraptor's Retreat. "A pox upon your foolishness, travelers, but the gate's open. Leave, before I come to senses and throw you in the stockades for your own good."
The pair quickly left, leaving the sullen captain behind.

Once past the gate and the guards, the man's form blurred, revealing Kain. The staff he had held also revealed itself to be the bloodstained pike Seras had carried, which he returned to her.
Seras gazed at the layout before them. Two cave rested in cliff face, behind the waterfall. "So, which is the entrance?"
Kain shrugged. "I know not. If it isn't one, it is the other. Let's get this over with."
