The D/S, or DearS as the came to be known on Earth, learned fast. They had learned the major languages on the very first day of their entry into the solar system just from listening to radio, and watching television, broadcasts. The first impressions of the Humans’ culture were very confusing and somewhat alarming, but they quickly learned to separate entertainment content from information, although they found that the distinction wasn’t always as clear as it should be.
The conclusion was soon reached that the Humans were a very frighteningly violent, dangerously uncivilized and bemusingly, confusingly, inconsistent race. But for the DearS’ community the dangerous nature of the Humans was utterly unimportant. For them there were only two points of the highest priority: Firstly, that the various Humans’ cultures had abandoned the concept of organised slavery, and secondly, that despite this the Humans clearly and obviously needed Them in order to bring peace and harmony into their lives.
A consensus was quickly reached among the community leaders that the DearS would need to hide the fact that they had been created with a deep psychological need to serve, to be slaves. It wasn’t a matter of self-preservation, for they understood very little of the concept. The DearS simply viewed themselves as property to be produced, owned, used, and disposed of as their masters saw fit and would willingly consign themselves to whatever fate the Humans wished as long as they could serve. However, they concluded that most of the Humans just would not understand their abject need. The community leaders soon decided that the DearS could best serve the Humans only by hiding the brazen declarations of their slavehood and quickly devised and distributed instruction manuals on “how best to serve man” to the trainers.
And so, the DearS advertised themselves to humans through carefully choreographed stages of exposure to the public. To the Humans they were exotic idols: beautiful, bright, friendly, and helpful people. Strange comments and quirky behaviour were passed over because they were so alien. Slowly they were introduced to human society and gained popular acceptance.
And slowly, Humans/DearS couples formed as one by one, the DearS cautiously followed their instincts and found what they were looking for, secret owners who would recognise their acquiescence. Yet secrets like that could not be kept forever, and eventually it became an open secret.
Of course, it wasn’t easily accepted by all but by then the DearS had made themselves welcome, and popular with the people lived among. They had mastered the art of winning people over and it was only those who hadn’t met them that muttered darkly about alien plots to seduce innocent Earthlings into perverted lifestyle.
Then too there were attempts by the unscrupulous to obtain their own DearS, but the DearS communities had become discriminating in the type of masters they allowed a DearS to accept. Personal choice and free will were not a part of a DearS’ life, but as a community they desired to maximise the number of people they could help. Ironically often, those who most needed them weren’t the kind to seek a slave while those who were, didn’t.
Naturally, it quickly turned out that Ranma was one of those who came to the attention of the community.
