Slayers Emerald: Money Woes [Episode 137197]

by Disruptor

Dilgear and some beast men were watching a trio of people. One of them was a young girl dressed like a sorceress; another was a longhaired blonde man dressed like a mercenary solider. The last was dressed very odd. He wore strange blue pants, a short sleeved tunic with three buttons near the throat, weird looking shoes, and some sort of coat that had two strips of metal running down the edges of the coat. Also the pants and the coat had built in pouches.

Dilgear muttered, "That must be the guy Zelgadis faced. He must have changed his clothes into that freakish outfit. We just follow them until we get another shot."

Unaware they were being watched, Kyle talked to Lina. Pulling out his wallet, he looked at his money.

"I have a question. How am I supposed to pay for any food? I really don't have local currency on me."

Lina looked at what Kyle was checking.

"What is that you have there?" Lina asked.

"Currency or money from where I'm from. We use specially printed pieces of paper as our money," Kyle replied, as he pulled out a small pocketful of change. "We do have some coins, but they aren't as valuable as the pieces of paper."

Lina looked at the coins in disbelief. "Copper and steel? No gold or silver?"

Kyle shrugged. "Gold's heavy. It's valuable, but it's not used as currency. The same goes for silver."

Lina shuddered, as she thought. "A world where gold and silver aren't used as money. I don't think I could stand it."

Putting his money and billfold away, Kyle said, "I'm kind of stumped on ideas for money."

Kyle explained the duties of the Green Lantern Corps and the rules he had found out.

Confused, Gourry asked, "No pay to act as guards? How did these Guardians expect their guardsmen to eat?"

"Each Green Lantern had to find his own way of making money without using the ring, to prevent an upset of the local economy. I'm an artist myself, but that takes time," Kyle replied.

Gourry said, "Sounds like slave labor to me."

Lina cut into the conversation. "Gourry's right about that. People are going to expect you to use your powers to make money here. You might as well get used to that idea. Use your ring to keep yourself alive"

Kyle smiled as an idea came to him, and said, "There is an amateur chemistry project I wanted to do. Is there a beach with sand nearby?"

Confused, Lina pointed to a nearby riverbank. "There's some sand right there. Why do you want it?"

Kyle walked over to the riverbank and scooped out a handful of sand. He nodded in satisfaction and let the sand drop back down.

Kyle asked, "Do either of you have any iron on you that you won't be needing? A rusty nail or something."

Gourry said, "I have a spare pin for my sword you could use. It got bent a while back and is unusable."

Kyle took the pin from Gourry and placed it on the sand. Green light flared from Kyle's ring, as he concentrated upon the sand and piece of iron. Lina watched as the sand melted and reformed into numerous small blobs. The blobs slowly crystallized and the green light faded.

Kyle stood up. "Silicon-dioxide mixed with just a little bit of iron and crystallized."

Lina gaped at the stunt that Kyle had just pulled off. Where there used to be sand, there was now a small mound of amethyst gems. Only a small part of the pin that Gourry had given Kyle had been used.

"Th-that's incredible," Lina stammered. "That should cover you for quite a while. You'll have to turn it into coinage, but that shouldn't be too hard."

Kyle said, "I'll let you handle that. You can take ten percent as a fee. You know more about this world than I do. It won't wreck the economy will it?"

Lina stared at Kyle. "No, it won't. There are mages who do spend time making gems. The produce sapphires and rubies for the most part. They are used to make magic items and...."

Kyle held up a hand. "Please gather the gems up and tell me about this world while we walk. You already know about my mine."

Lina quickly bagged the gems and the small pin. The three of them continued on their way. Lina, loving the chance to lecture, told Kyle about the world he was in.

Watching from a distance, Dilgear gave a small snort. "So. Our new adversary isn't from this world. Rezo should be told about this."
