Sighing, Rick made his decision. "I guess I should go. At least the spaceship sounds interesting to see."
A flash of light caused Rick to pull his fan-jet to one side. He spotted a flash of green and something thudded into the ground.
"What the heck was that? A meteorite?"
Curious, Rick brought the fan-jet to land near the impact crater. Taking a deep breath, he got out of the jet and walked into the crater. Even by his limited knowledge, Rick realized the crater should have been bigger. Sitting in the center of indentation, he saw a green rock with a green ring imbedded upright.
"Okay. This getting weird," Rick muttered. "Could this have belonged to somebody working in a satellite that was destroyed during the war?"
Without thinking about it, Rick put his hand on the ring. Both the ring and rock started to glow brightly.
"I'm going to die of radiation poisoning," Rick thought, closing his eyes to shield them from the incandescence.
After a few tense seconds, Rick opened his eyes and saw that the rock had transformed into a lantern and that he was now wearing the ring. He was also wearing a strange green and black outfit.
Looking straight at the ring, Rick demanded, "What is going on? What are you?"

To answer your second question first: this unit is a power ring that is used by the members of the Green Lantern Corps to spread peace and order. The Power Battery that you see before you is used to recharge this ring when its power is depleted. The uniform you are wearing can be dispelled by an act of will. But it is recommended that you do wear it when acting as a Green Lantern.
The ring gave a brief history of the Green Lantern Corps and the final fall due to one of its members.
The other ten rings and batteries were thrown into alternate realties and will also find those who will wield them with honor.
In a daze, Rick picked up the lantern and put it in his fan-jet. He almost absently caused the uniform to disappear and have his regular clothes reappear.
"I must be dreaming," Rick muttered to himself, as he looked at the ring. "Maybe not. I'll think about this later. I have a spaceship launch to go see next week."
