"I would go show those military jocks up with my fan-jet, but I'm too wiped from using the ring," Rick thought yawning.
Clicking off the radio, Rick addressed the ring. "Is there anyway I can hide the lantern on my person, so I don't lose it."
The power battery can be stored in subspace and called by an act of your will, or it can be altered in shape and size to be carried on your person.
"Right. I guess I'll change it for now," Rick thought, as he grabbed the lantern with one hand.
The lantern glowed and shaped itself into a folding rectangle. The lantern symbol was displayed prominently on the outside of the rectangle. Rick quickly slipped the changed power battery into his back pocket.
Rick landed his fan-jet and got out. He waited for a bit and saw that Roy was finishing up his speech. Roy handed the microphone off to someone and saw Rick. He smiled and headed on over.
"Rick, it's good to see you. I surprised that you didn't show off."
"Tired," Rick said, waving that off. "I was doing something other than figuring out new ways to kill people like you have been and that wiped me out."
Roy grimaced and replied, "You don't understand Rick. Someday, you probably will. By the way, green? I though red was your favorite color."
"I have had a recent change in my favorite color," Rick said with a smile.
Roy shrugged. "At any rate, come with me. I'd like you to see what the new jets are like. It beats any sort of flying you've done so far."
Rick replied, "Maybe. Maybe not."
Sunlight glinted on Rick's power ring.

In the outer reaches of the solar system, several ships appeared and made their way towards Earth. The computers on the SDF-1 sensed the arrival and started power build up in the reflex cannon much to the fright of Captain Gloval and his bridge crew. The reflex canon fired. The beam of energy split and holed two of the approaching ships.
Back on Earth, Rick asked, "What was with all the fireworks?"
Roy replied, "I'll be back. I do want to take you up in one of our Veritechs."
Roy left Rick sitting in the Veritech that was set up for a display purpose. Seeing that he was alone, Rick looked at his ring.
"Can you tell me what that was all about?"
Request acknowledged. Energy discharge has the characteristics of a hyper-particle weapon. Further scanning indicates energy discharge destroyed two space ships out of one hundred seventeen ships that are making their way towards this planet. Scanning computer records of ship designated SDF-1 shows that the ship was programmed to attack its pursuers when they got to close to prevent its destruction and warn off its pursuers.
Rick whispered, "An invasion force."
On the bridge of the SDF-1, Sammy reported, "Captain, something just went through the computer database."
Gloval asked, "Any idea what it was looking for?"
"It went straight towards the files that control the main gun and accessed part of the code that we haven't been able to decipher," Sammy replied.
"Was it before or after the main gun fired?" Gloval asked.
"It was after," Sammy responded. "I'm just now picking up what the main gun fired at. It fired upon two ships in the vicinity of Mars, destroying them."
Captain Gloval started laughing. "That code. I can guess at exactly what it contains. It was a booby trap. A person fleeing from an enemy leaves traps behind to slow down and hinder pursuit. Go to red alert and get all our pilots into the air. We're being invaded."
Rick Hunter glanced at his ring and then at the control panel of the Veritech.
