"An' what do we get out of it?" Lydia asked. Somebody cracked their knuckles behind Lydia, which triggered the sound of Lydia's neck popping, with what she smelled.
"Listen, kiddies," Britanny said. "Against my advice, Brianna thinks having you along is going to be a good idea...so behave."
As she spoke she leaned over the three rats threateningly.
"What do you want?" Lydia asked weakly.
"Okay," Brianna said, sharply. "Between you, me, and Brit, we'll be able to track down whereever these....*teeth grit*...people went. At which point, you are going to help us and Penny Pincer get my kid and her cousin out so that we can safely call down the sky on these people."
"Fine," Lydia said. "We can do that."
"We're just waiting for Penny," Brianna said.
"We're not waiting any longer," Penny said.
****
"I don't believe we're working for that..." Lydia's signing proceeded on towards rather risky vocabulary.
"I'm really glad that she doesn't understand signing," Romeo said.
"Stop playing with your hands," Brit said.
"That isn't playing," Brianna said. "They're using some form of sign language. Don't recognize it though. Penny?"
"Nope," Penny said as she came down with the binoculars. "Well, I know who's behind it now."
"Who's that?" Brianna asked.
"Pee Wee," Penny said.
"Oooo...he's gonna get it," Brianna snarled. "Do you see Daishi anywhere?"
"Nope," Penny said. "There's some new ninja."
"Ninja?" Romeo repeated.
"He replaced Daishi?' Britanny said. "That's not good."
"This guy uses, ninja?" Lydia said in a disparaging tone of voice.
"Genetically enhanced ninja," Penny said.
"Ninja," the three rats said dismissively.
"What's your beef with ninjas?" Brit asked.
"They're, like, wererat wannabes, ya know?" Moisha said.
"Right," Brianna said. "Well try to take Pee Wee's people seriously, okay?"
"Pfft," Lydia scoffed.
****
"Okay," Lydia said softly into the radio headset. "We're in, the alarm's off. You can come in any time you want."
"What was that?" Romeo asked as the building shook.
"It was like, a small explosion," Moisha said.
*What are you guys doing in there!* Brianna demanded over the radio.
"That wasn't us," Lydia retorted.
"What is this?" a voice said. "It seems we have intruders." Lydia and the rats turned to see a large masked man approaching them.
"You must be the #$#@ing ninja," Lydia said rolling her eyes.
"He's a big ninja," Romeo said, rethinking his opinion of ninja, or at least this ninja.
"He's just a ninja," Lydia said.
"Lyds..." Moisha whimpered. "I don't think you're, like, thinking clearly."
"Wererats," Shin said, arching an eyebrow. He smiled under his mask. "This would truly be a trial worthy of me...if you weren't children."
"Ah shut up!" Lydia snapped, leaping forward to attack with her sword. Lydia was skilled for her age, but Shin was, if not at the level of her sensei, than at least near it. And Lydia was nowhere near that level.
She did not see the succession of strikes that left her bleeding and incapcitated on the floor, unable to feel anything below where her severed spine was just barely starting to heal.
"Uh...Lyds?" Moisha said.
"Lydia?" Romeo repeated. They received a gurgle in response, followed by a cough that produced a trickle of blood from the rat-girl's mouth. "Uh oh"
Lydia's hand reached out shakily reached to grip the dagger that had fallen upon the floor next to her, her sword having been knocked out of reach.
"Well," Shin said, reaching down. "A silver dagger with your name on it, how appropriate."
He swung down and found his strike blocked by a furred hand.
"Nobody gives ANY were silver while I'm around, jerk," Britanny said.
