They're going to Hogwarts! They really are!
About half of the parents were "homeschooled" after primary school( if they even managed to get even that much basic schooling), which in this neighborhood usually meant schooled haphazordly at best and not at all at worst, and the other half had considered themselves lucky to have been allowed to attend the at the time recently created day school in West Hogsmeade. They had no real idea of what their children are getting into, but they do know that a Hogwarts education would give their children more chances, more skills, more connections--more everything, he supposed.
And they were willing to risk seeing their children drift away little by little, turning up their noses at their parents and family, too. For that happened, with depressing regularity.
Especially with the successful ones, who did manage to leave the wrong side of town...
Tom Riddle sighs. He is so tired, sometimes.
5 children to enter Hogwarts next year. By the time graduation rolled around, one or two would drop out or die in a "fatal accident", two or three would graduate and find fairly good jobs and manage to drift into the lower middle/middle middle class, by and by, with or without the rest of their family, and maybe, just maybe, one would be on the way up.
And those were the ones who would quite literally ignore their parents and sibs if they met them on the street.
It couldn't be helped, he supposed. But still.
Still.
But now was not the time to think of this, much less talk. First celebrate, not to much, because Rosemary needs her beauty sleep, and then--
Ahh. He did have to catch up with his customers and their needs, sooner or later.
Tom M. Riddle, upstanding citizen of not-quite-Knockturn Alley West Hogsmeade and proud owner of a Apathcary which catered to the special needs of many--did have to make a living, after all...
