Changes were pretty much a guarantee. Like in the case of some humans from Earth ending up on the world of El Hazard, or in the case of four people zapped by cosmic rays in yet another universe, these two had superhuman abilities waiting to be unleashed as time went on.
As in the case of the "El Hazard" travellers, as well as those four astronauts, certain predilictions went into effect. Scientific curiosity and a fascination with gadgets had granted Makoto Mizuhara the ability of Telemechanics. Ben Grimm's rough-house "tough guy" nature had turned him into a rock-skinned strongman known as the Thing. Susan Storm's early tendency to fade into the background enhanced to true invisibility, or Katsuhiko Jinnai's fast-talking talent becoming the ability to speak to at least one other sentient race. Personality, or perception of same, was the foundation that formed the new ability.
Genma Saotome was many things. All-devouring gourmand, fat (or at least thick-bodied) and lazy, formidable martial artist, unwise and shortsighted, but able to show at least brief stirrings of responsibility and courage. All were simply different angles of the same individual. He had a great love of the martial arts, it being one of the few things that could stir his heart more than free food (witness his ability to starve himself between binges in order to pursue training for himself or his son), and a fair sense of self-preservation.
