But even lazy, overweight, and somewhat clueless martial artists had to have their shining moments.
One of Genma's came as his son and he were passing by a wagon filled with bags of rice. There was nothing unusual about it, nor was the sight of a child playing next to it was a shock. It was a scene that was similar to what he'd seen many times over the years, and didn't bring much more than the knowledge that there were people around. A part of his mind noted that it wasn't a good place to park, as there was a bit of a slope to the road, and they'd have to worry about that.
That became readily apparent when a tossed bag made the wagon start rolling... right at the child.
For once, the portly man did not think. He simply moved, and got between the child and the wagon. Using one hand, he blocked its movement, and looked over his shoulder to see his son pulling the kid out of the way.
"Oh no! That wasn't supposed to happen!" a man, clearly a relative of the child choked, "Thank you..."
"It's no problem..." Genma replied, "I just had to do it."
"You have my thanks, and that of my family. We're in your debt."
"Really?"
"You prevented what could have been a horrible thing from happening..."
Genma smiled, letting the man think that he was merely giving a polite expression. But behind that 'false cheer' was a conniving mind that wondered what he could get for his efforts. It wouldn't be anything too big, but he was hungry, and either lunch or one of the bags of rice would have done him well. However, medical attention quickly became more important as he found his arm suddenly losing strength as he considered the possibilities.
So, the other man blinked and looked down under the wagon at the child's rescuer. "Are you alright?"
"Just fine..." Genma replied with a groan, while:
