They were called the Greys and their technology was apparently so far advanced over that of 1959 that the scientists who swarmed over the wreckage couldn't make any sense of it.
At first it looked as if the US was going to take custody of both, but the international hue and cry was such that this became less of a consideration. The arrival and crash had been VERY public.
Several problems quickly came to light. Their homeworld apparently did not have a lot of bright light, had a lower gravity, and was chillier than where they had crashed which was fifty two miles outside New York City. They'd apparently aimed for a point near a major coastal city but away enough that a crash wouldn't endanger the populace.
The aliens were put in quarantine. Not only might they have trouble with terrestrial germs, they might be bringing alien germs with them.
Some were fascinated with the technology. Some wanted details on their culture. Others their biology and sheer alien-ness. Within months crash programs to understand details of the alien propulsion system had developed in nineteen countries. The fascination with extraterrestrial life and the possibilities of that had proven to have repercussions that shook the foundation of the world and shattered several preconceived notions.
The crash had occurred in the summer of 1959. By 1961 things had calmed down somewhat and the promised rescue ship had come to retrieve the refugees. At which point:
