And then the Greys came very unintentionally.
Two years later, the world was a very different place. After all, there was completely clear proof that there was sentient life beyond humans. But the resulting ripples from that did not only follow in social ramifications. In just moving the aliens and what wreckage they could, the people of Earth were exposed to new concepts of biology and technology. They could examine highly advanced devices, and even if they were not totally sure on how the things worked, or, in some cases, what they did, they could at least get some inspiration for their own machines.
When the rescue ship arrived, it was clear that the 'contamination' of the local species was not something that could be removed. No matter what happened, they were not going to be going on the same as they had been, and no directives would change that. They could be protected, but they would not stay still.
Something else did become apparent as well. Humanity, for all its warlike attitudes, irresponsible behaviors, disharmony, and destructive tendencies, had not only welcomed the Greys, but had actually worked to keep them safe and in good health. When faced with the presence of another race, this simple race that was only on the verge of placing ships into orbit had shown themselves to actually be able to accept things that some might have thought would have brought out self preservation instincts.
That brought up certain possibilities. There was no way that the unintended influences could be removed, but they could be mitigated. The race had great promise, both in being guided to become at least more advanced, and in their acceptance of others. Certainly, one wouldn't expect the species to accept all others, but they had a talent in accepting variety, even with the reactions of the more fearful of their kind.
Humans might have been backwards and combative, but there was much that could be done there.
So, negotiations were started, and changes were made to the path that humanity would take. Technologies that were thought to be on a level humanity could handle were shared, and aliens came to the planet to give lessons. Some nations wanted nothing to do with the extraterrestrials, and others were constantly inviting the immigrants from the stars, but neither group of humans were stupid enough not to know that the changes would happen no matter what they did. Aliens were coming to live on the planet, and as some found the planet enjoyable, there was a shift to a rather special situation. The beings from the stars, with representatives from various races, started to come there to live... permanently, some with their families already started, and settled into what was fast becoming a suburb... of the galaxy.
Oddly enough, that was a concept that the aliens got from humanity and thought it something good to adopt.
Things just wouldn't be quite the same while:
