The races were categorized by different methods, depending on the race doing the categorizing, but the simplest method was that some groups were shaped sufficiently different or environmentally specialized that using one group's equipment was difficult for some of the species involved.
Humans therefore ended up classifying the groups as Near Human, NonHumanoid (or Real Weirdies to some), and Humanoid.
The centauroid insectile Tkk'rnn for example were NonHumanoid. Having to wear special equipment just to function in an Earthlike environment (they lived in temperatures that would kill almost any other sentient and breathed an atmospheric mix that was poisonous to most others), and having eight limbs made for a certain distance with the other races. They were of the Nonhumanoid variety.
There were the Aragami, but nobody who knew anything about them wanted anything to do with them. Nonhumanoid. Though there were rumors...
There were the Greys who were short and slender beings with dark black eyes, who had trouble with the Earth's gravity and light level. They were classed Humanoid. They visited Earth, but rarely stayed for long in such uncomfortable conditions.
Those settling on the suburbs of Earth were mostly of the Near Human variety, it simplified matters greatly if you could eat the same food and breathe the same air - not to mention all the doorways and equipment that were scaled/designed for something shaped like humans to use.
