[Episode 138068] [Episode 138068]"Chief Engineer's log. October first, C.E. 71. Due to the signing of the ceasefire treaty between ZAFT and the Earth Forces, I've revised the work schedules for the staff working on the ZGMF - X15A Gargoyle Gundam, the ZGMF - X16A Juggernaut Gundam and the ZGMF - X17A Eden Gundam. Although the ceasefire is welcome, I'm not certain if the Earth Forces can keep their promise not to act aggressively. The last time ZAFT let their guard down, we had the Bloody Valentine tragedy earlier this year. That's why I plan on getting the suits up and running by two weeks. The actual construction is done so we just need to work on the OS and that shouldn't be too much of a problem. End log." She pressed a button to stop the recording and took a deep breath.
A male with red hair poked his head into the office. "You okay, Irene?"
"Just feeling the strain, Chad. Don't worry about me." She gave a weak smile and took a sip of her coffee.
"Alright. We're going to give the units an inspection and then activate the security protocols. At least we won't have to worry about these units getting stolen, eh?" Chad gave a chuckle.
"Indeed." Irene grabbed a clipboard with a pencil and some paper before finishing the rest of her coffee. As she and her co-worker Chad entered the elevator to go down to where the units were being kept, she initiated the conversation. "So what are your thoughts on this ceasefire treaty that ZAFT signed with the Earth Alliance?"
"I'm hoping that this will lead to something more permanent. War is a terrible thing and I'm certain that there are a lot of people who feel that way," murmured Chad.
The chief engineer nodded. "I understand but I can't help thinking that this won't last. I don't trust those Naturals." She sighed and then changed the topic. "By the way, have you purchased the latest album by Lacus Clyne? It's quite adorable."
"To be honest, her music is too sweet for my taste. If I hear 'In The Quiet Night' one more time, I'm going to start crying in disgust," muttered Chad.
The elevator doors opened to reveal a catwalk where several feet below them, the three new Gundams lay dormant. "I would have thought that you would have been a big fan of..." Irene trailed off when she noticed the commotion down below. "Oh my God!!"
Chad looked over and forced himself to hold his lunch in. The staff who had reported in for the morning shift all lay dead beside various pieces of equipment. Men wearing black uniforms were scattered all over the place, each armed with a firearm. Irene forced herself and Chad down to the catwalk's steel platform to keep the two of them out of sight. "This place is a top secret ZAFT facility! Who are those guys and how do they know about this place?"
"Psst!! Irene!! Chad!!" The duo turned over to see one of their co-workers hiding nearby.
"Akira!! Are we glad to see you! What's going on here?" asked Chad.
The man with black hair spoke in a whisper. "It all happened so fast. Before we come up with any plans, I just want to double check if there's anyone else that went upstairs this morning."
"Everyone reported in for their shift on time. According to the computer, the ones who are off duty checked back in at the residence village," replied Irene.
"Ok...in that case. I have a plan." After saying that, Akira pulled out a pistol with a silencer on it and fired two bullets into his chest along with a bullet directly into Chad's skull, ensuring the man's death.
"CHAD!!!" Not being a ZAFT soldier at the front lines, the sight of blood and guts caused Irene to hyperventilate. "A-Akira...why?"
"My superiors ordered me to terminate anyone who worked on these units and who isn't a part of the Obsidian Abyss. Nothing personal." He fired a few shots into Irene's chest with one last bullet to the brain. With the deed done, Akira pulled out a communicator. "That's the last of them. Let's get the mobile suits up and running. By the end of the month, I want their armour to be stained in the blood of those filthy Naturals."
