"Who gave her that robot?" Rei thought. "She seems to have a clue now who did it. I felt something when I first met her. The same thing I felt when Pilot Shinji said bad things about Commander Ikari."
Rei suddenly realized that she was following Nagisa. She stopped and went down a different road. She got her bearings and proceeded on her way.
"I want nothing to do with her, beyond what Commander Ikari asks of me. I will have to find a different way to NERV. At least she doesn't go to the same school as I do."
As Rei entered her apartment, she took a glance around her room. A tear fell from her cheek, as she sat in the middle of the trash-covered floor.
"I can pilot an Eva, but she has Iczer Robo. She-she is happy. I do not know what happiness is. Do I have a purpose any more?"
Rei stood up and changed into some clothes that were somewhat clean. She went back to sitting on the floor and curled her knees up to her chest.
"What is wrong with me?" Rei asked. "Why do my eyes burn? Why am I crying?"
Rei sat that way, even after the sun went down and darkness overtook her room. Rei made some sniffing noises to staunch the tear flow, but couldn't
"Nagisa Kara can smile. She can wear stuff that is not regulation. She is able to make friends. I can not do any of those things."
"Should I just end it all? Am I useless?" Rei thought, before a dreamless sleep overcame her.
