Magitech: The Rune Of Ranma [Episode 140045]

by Kestral

The magic was powerful and useful. Not everyone had a Rune, but there were enough people in many professions who found them extremely useful.

Firefighters armed with Water or Ice Runes for example. If there were six of them, at least one of that squad would have one of the two Runes. While the average policeman lacked a Rune, those who were able to manifest the talent necessary to use one would eventually gain one. Being able to use a Wind Rune to hurl a concussive blast of air at a fleeing felon, or to activate a Darkvision Rune to see in the dark, or to invoke an Ice Rune and throw ice arrows at a moment's notice. All very useful. Likewise soldiers had their 'Rune Specialists' who had a talent or prediliction for a certain type of magic and could expect all the advantages and disadvantages of being a specialist combatant.

Genma dragged Ranma off to these far off lands, like many explorers and opportunists had done in trying to find the "truth" behind the legends. The difference was that Genma had found something.

The cave was concealed at high tide, and inhospitable at low tide. Only someone with the sort of skills Genma possessed could get in and out again in that time. The cave had held a glassy orb that Genma had recognized from an earlier viewing of Rune Orbs. He took it and snuck back out again.

What he hadn't expected was that at one point the Orb was being examined by his son, the Rune within flashed and flowed out of the Orb by itself. Ranma had been knocked out, and there was a Rune marking his left hand now. Genma didn't know what it was, but for a Rune to apply itself meant it was a powerful one. What he didn't realize was that:
