Usagi's New Day: Lunar Search [Episode 140716]

by Kender

It was almost as if people could count how long they were holding their breaths by how many puffs the retro-thrusters gave off. As the fragile Earth craft came down, it was almost like a small child blowing the sand off of a rock as it sat down as close as it could to a much older and grumpy relative. Anyone on that craft, or watching its live feed could tell the simple levels of the two space vehicles were terribly far apart. But as the seven lone souls set down upon that silent and ancient spot, there was a sense that this was something that meant a lot.

No matter how it went, no one would be able turn back though, and knowing that it could mean their death, or a complete revision of how humanity saw itself in the universe, they continued onwards, allowing themselves to land upon a place that was ancient when their ancestors were banging rocks together. The small 'thump' and cessation of movement told them that they had made it, and it took a few moments for any of those astronauts to realize that they had landed upon their homeworld's celestial companion. There had been a time when that would have been enough to satisfy their exploratory urges.

But there was more to this mission than a simple visit to the moon. So, those going suited up, and made their way slowly to the airlock, passing out onto the surface of the dry rock below the craft. The small crew set up cameras and sensory equipment before they set out upon the reason why they were truly there.

Single file they walked to the perimeter of the zone where the danger had supposedly lay. One of them put his hand out and waved it through the imagined 'border', but nothing happened. Then a few of them tried walking over and into the zone, discovering nothing of what had taken down the other crafts, but saw that they were safe. So they moved on to the next part, allowing the different gravity to give extra bounce to their movements. They headed in towards what had been fascinating every scientist around since its discovery.

But when they stopped meters shy of the Castle, they discovered just what it was like to stand in the presence of such a magnificent piece of engineering, if that was what it was. Glittering in the light, it was something that no man could have ever hoped to have managed to replicate with their current technology levels.

However there was one other problem. On the somehow still shining walls, there was nothing to suggest an opening of any type. Not a single door, nor a window was visible, and it was clear that gaining entry would not be a simple matter.

That left the explorers staring up at the Anomaly, while:
