So it was with Meia Gisborn. In one reality she had been a tough squadron leader of some pirate fighter "snubships." In another she was a warrior of a Chinese Amazon tribe, the child of an Outsider male and a Amazon mother. As in that reality, she had some issues and problems - and a distrust of the male gender.
As in the "VanDread" universe, she had several associates that would have been instantly recognizable to someone familiar with the crew of the Nirvana. There was a Dita Liebely, a Jura, a Barnette, and so on. All of whom had grown up as part of the same tribe in the same village.
Meia intended to get Dita a birthday present. This male warrior seemed a good choice. Oh, admittedly - the sort of challenge she'd issued had a limited duration, usually five years. Meia thought this a good thing acrually - the Outsider would eventually move on and things would return to normal. Except that with any luck Dita would have a child by that point and the girl would get over herself.
Unfortunately, someone else had plans too.
It was a difficult thing to be a stranger in your own home.
She nonetheless was. In a village of those who were misfits from Chinese society at large, she failed to fit in here as well.
She watched and listened. The boy had three slaves. A martial artist girl who would not have been too out of place within the village. Another who was not quite village material. The third was an Outsider healer.
Together with the boy they offered something fairly attractive. An opportunity.
All she had to do was defeat the boy, or be defeated by him, and she had a chance to escape the village and see the world. Not a bad deal.
At least, it wouldn't be a bad deal for:
