How could his parents just be--dead?
He wasn't the only child who had raged at the world in this fashion, of course.
Far from it.
The boy watched his parents grave, heedless of the rain poaring down his hair and his clothes.
The umbrella his parents--no, his now--loyal butler held out went untaken.
The boy raged.
It would have been better for him if he could grieve properly.
But he couldn't.
The loyal butler feared he never would be able to, at all.
Once upon a time, there had been a boy who lost his parents, and raged.
And he would have become a man, by and by, still carrying that pain...
And that rage.
But that was another timeline, not this one.
The butler hadn't been there, when a gap opened up in the sky.
And he hadn't been in a position to see anything that happened afterwards, either.
Anything expect a great light that seemed to reach into the very bottom of his heart. He hadn't much liked what it had shown him, no he hadn't...
But that was neither here or now.
He had no idea what had happened, but...
"Master Bruce? --Come, you should eat your cereal, now..."
His young charge stared blankly at him.
"...Please."
--At least the boy wasn't having those nightmares any more, night after night after night.
One had to be thankful for small favors...
