Alexander Joseph Luthor sighed.
It was going to be one of Those Days.
"Yes, I know, Bruce. You told me at least...about a 100 times, now?"
"--79 times, I think. ...Sorry. How was your date with Carrie?"
"...Fine, thank you. --That was supposed to be a secret, by the way."
"--Oh. Sorry again. --Is Victoria mad at you again?"
"She almost always is, all right?"
Lex snarled.
And the reason she isn't always mad at you is that you're too weird to date, frankly speaking."
"...You should stop doing musical chairs with the girls, you know? Less trouble that way."
"--I know the theory already, all right? Damn you're annoying sometimes, Bruce Wayne!"
Bruce brushed his hair back from his forehead, and considered this.
"I must be. Why do you put up with me, then?"
"...Because almost everybody else is worse."
Bruce shrugged. That sounded true enough, strangely enough.
"--Bruce?"
"Hmmm?"
"My mother's dead, too, you know."
"I know. ...You told me."
"--And I wish with all my heart I was an orphan, sometimes."
"...You told me that, too."
They sat together in companiable silence, then, as the cool breeze washed over the pools and hot tubs...
"It's all right, Lex. --I don't think your father's quite...there, sometimes."
Lex sighed, and laughed, at that.
"You don't know the least of it, yon idiot."
Lex sounded so strange. Bruce wondered if he'd take it the wrong way if he hugged him, or something. Like Alfred had, once upon a time...
"It's not that he's not "there", it's that his version of "there" is---Oh, hell. It's---"
Love doesn't do a damn thing to help, sometimes.
Bruce Wayne does know that.
"--Just why do you keep talking about your parents like that, Bruce?"
"--Like what?"
"Like--You're reciting a stat sheet, or something. Names, dates of birth, schooling, accomplishments..."
"Oh."
He hadn't realized that would be considered strange.
"I'm trying to remember them, I think."
"...Oh. ---Why?"
"Alfred keeps talking about them, you know. Every day and every night, when I'm home."
The breeze was cool, across their skin.
"It's weird, though...I hardly remember them at all..."
