I'm totally living within my means, you know?"

"...That is not the point, Master Alfred - Your parents would have been horrified to see you turn into a, a..."
""Good for nothing wastral"? Come on, Alfred...I'm still young. Think of it as a business trip, then - I'll be going around the world, ferreting out opportunities and doing good works, alright?"
Alfred hissed, and bit his lips.
"There does not seem to be any more point to this conversation, Master Bruce."
"...Mmmmm. Maybe not. I - Are you sure you don't want to come with me, Alfred? You could use a break, too, I think..."
"No, Master Bruce. I will not."
Hmmmmmmm.
"Or you could even take a vacation without me! Wouldn't you like that?"
"...No, Master Bruce."
Bruce Wayne looked at his de facto foster father stomp away, disapproval radiating from his back, and sighed.
That hadn't gone well.
Not that he'd thought it would have, but still.
"But Alfred, my parents are dead."
The whisper was blown away by the wind, unheard.
Six months later, Bruce Wayne was looking at a young man. Boy, rather.
The boy looked back.
"...Alfred?"
"This is Master Dick Grayson, that I wrote to you about, Master Bruce."
Yes, yes, I know that, Alfred.
What I don't understand is why you thought taking in a ward using my name without consulting me first was a good idea.
Bruce Wayne sighed, then. What the hell.
If it made Alfred happy...
And charity should start at home, he supposed.
