Most people had never heard of it - unless directly affected, they'd dismiss it as something that made for fleetingly interesting but quickly forgotten stories, not worthy of extended attention.
To those involved, however, it was hell. The war had been going on for longer than most of the combattants' lifetimes by now, and both sides were still feeding fresh troops into the slaughter with no end in sight.
Most of the soldiers were more or less born into it, some were there by choice, some had been dragged kicking and screaming, and some had ended up on one side or another by complete accident. But they still fought, and died. Unwilling warriors, most of them.
