"Just a cat," the girl said.
Luna countered, "I'm not just a cat. I'm a Moon Cat."
"A talking cat?" The girl said, as she backed up and her eyes widened.
"My name is Luna. I've been searching for you and others like you for a while now," the cat said.
"What does a talking cat want with me?" Rei asked, a bit bewildered.
Luna did a back flip and a red wand with a gold sphere that had a stylized symbol for iron emblazoned on it.
"This transformation pen will allow you to transform into the Warrior of Fire: Sailor Mars. You will need to become Sailor Mars to fight the Youma that the Dark Kingdom will send. By the way, what is your name?"
"Rei. Rei Hino. What was with that light beam?"
Luna shook her head. "I have no idea. I was hoping you could tell me. It's what led me to you. I did notice that they all seemed to merge into one light and drop somewhere. It's probably noting important."
"I'm alone?"
"For now, until I can find the others," Luna replied. "One of your responsibilities is to help me find them, the Silver Crystal, and the Moon Princess."
Rei pulled out a ward and chanted the phrase to activate it and slapped it across Luna's back. Luna looked at Rei and smiled.
"I'm not possessed or an evil spirit."
Rei hesitantly picked up the wand and held it up. "How do I work this?"
"Repeat after me. Mars Planet Power! Make Up!"
"Mars Planet Power! Make Up!"
The iron symbol flared red and rings of fire surrounded Rei. The fires vanished and she was transformed into Sailor Mars.
"I look a little bit like Sailor V."
"Ahem. When there is a Youma nearby, you transform and use your powers to fight. I thought I sensed one earlier, but then those seven lights shot upwards."
Rei figured out how to detransform and stared at Luna. "Until then, I'm going to need as much help as I can get."
Luna shook her head. "You can't tell anyone. That is supposed to be a secret identity."
"That's not what I was thinking, but thanks for clearing that up anyway," Rei said with a grimace.
"Oh. What then?"
"I know how to create spirit wards and hopefull preform excorcisims. That should help a little bit, but more magical knowledge would be of great use. I can't recall any other magic systems at the moment."
"I see," Luna said, nodding. "I have to agree with you. What about Futhark?"
"Futhark?" Rei asked.
"Viking Runes or Rune Magic," Luna explained. "If I recall correctly you can use either the Viking gods or the spirits of nature to infuse the runes with power."
"That is a very good place to start. I'll pass on the gods, but asking local spirits for help," Rei said. "I'll tell Grandpa that I found you hungry and fed you. You just decided not to leave."
The next day, the elder Hino just accepted that Rei had a pet and left Luna alone. Rei found a book on Rune Magic and sighed heavily. She also bought some books on helping her learn the English language a bit better. As the days passed, Luna was able to help Rei translate the book. Rei was shocked that the Runes could be used in a variety of ways. It's just that no one took them seriously anymore. Rei planned out a single grouping of Runes and what they would do. After that, Luna and Rei bowed to a tree and thanked the spirit of the tree in a proper Shinto fashion and cut off a single branch. They took the branch and cut it into several small circles. That done, the two carved the runes Fehu, Eolh, and Ing into the disks. While her grandfather was out, Rei transformed into Sailor Mars and infused each disk with some mystical energy.
Using her sensitivity, Luna examined each rune-disk. "You can only use each one once. I'd save them for when there was no other choice."
Sailor Mars smiled, as she picked up a disk. "This is just basics for now. My wards to banish evil spirits, these exploding rune disks, combined with my powers as Sailor Mars should suffice until we find the other Sailor Senshi. I do intend to build more on the magic front."
Luna said, "I think I saw a fortune teller setting up nearby."
"I can do my own fortune telling," Rei said, as she transformed back to normal. "However, there might be something of interest to build up my magical knowledge."
So Luna and Rei headed towards the Fortune House and Rei's first battle against Youma.
