While Michiru and Haruka were busy in the study, Hotaru went back upstairs. While she was studying as she had told her sister, she didn’t tell them what she was studying. She retrieved her grandfather’s journal from under her bed and opened it to where she had left off. She opened her mind and started to work though the exercises in her grandfather’s journal
”The Clouded Mind Can Not See is one of the most integral of my lessons, Daughter of My Spirit. Lesser minds can be clouded to your presence, leaving only your shadow visible. Eventually, you will be able to affect the material world with the strength of your will itself.”
Hotaru thought over that lesson and worked through how to make it work. She reached out with her mind and gradually she was able to ‘feel’ her room. She then withdrew back into herself and read more of the journal. She read of her grandfather’s adventures and of his costume. She took out the letter from the deposit box and re-read it. Hotaru decided that she could work out her powers by using them to help her find out more about her heritage and lineage.
She got up and went to her closet. Inside she pulled out a sturdy black shirt and a black coat. From her dresser she found a sturdy pair of black jeans. These, she decided, were the best approximation of what her grandfather had worn as his adventuring gear. Hotaru then decided to test her powers by sneaking into the study and see what her older sister and her friend was doing. Cloaking herself in the Clouded Mind, Hotaru went downstairs. Fortunately, they had left the door to the study slightly ajar. Carefully opening the door just enough, Hotaru was able to keep Michiru and Haruka from noticing her.
Hotaru walked over to the desk and stood behind her older sister. Hotaru looked past Michiru at the message she had just finished deciphering. The message read “As the Pharaoh commands, so it is written. In two days, you are to obtain the Jewel of Karnak from the Tokyo Museum and deliver it unto the dread Pharaoh. Hail, Mighty Pharaoh 90, Son of Osiris! As the Pharaoh commands, so it is written.” Hotaru backed up as Michiru walked over to shake her friend’s shoulder. After they left the room, Hotaru thought ‘I’d better tag along. It should be a good chance to work with my powers and I might find out more about those who killed my parents.’

While Michiru was working on deciphering the hieroglyphic message, little did she know that she was being watched from the night outside the window of the study. If she had looked, though, she would still have seen nothing to alarm her for what was watching had no physical form. The eyes that were watching her were several miles away in a room with one door and a shallow pan of water on a small table. The small room was lit by an electric wall sconce light.
Standing by the table and looking into the water was Eudial. In one hand she held a black lacquered staff that had a golden ankh on top. Woven into the loop of the ankh was a glistening black star that looked like it was made of onyx or obsidian. In the pool she was watching a reflection of the study Michiru was in.
”So, this is the interloper who dares interfere in the affairs of the Cult of Tanis and the dread Pharaoh. It seems that she has already deciphered the message.” She said. Thinking a bit, she dispelled the image with a wave of her staff. “It looks like they are planning to investigate the Jewel of Karnak. So much the better; I can achieve two tasks at the same time.” She held her right hand in front of her mouth and gave a little laugh. With that, she waved her staff a second time and turned off the light. As she left the room she said to the darkened room “Enjoy tomorrow, for it shall be your last day alive.”
