Silent Hero: Acessing the Vault II [Episode 144765]

by Sgt. Chibi De`Ohki

The card was a soft gold color, and somewhat thicker than Ranma had expected an ID card to be. The material was strong, but also flexible, and even when he folded it completely in half, it sprang back into pristine form. One side bore a picture of his grinning countenance, and the other listed his vital stats. Height, weight, gender.... Though, there was a seal in the lower right-hand corner, about the size of his thumb. He had a sudden flash of insight, but resisted the urge to press it like a button.

Experimentation could come after consulting the datacube -- the last thing he wanted was to find out it was some hot-line to his boss. He supposed that his employer most likely wouldn't be busy doing mundane tasks like having dinner, or sleeping, but at the same time rather expected he shouldn't pester the almighty without good cause.

He glanced at the blank space beneath his picture, which was a small box, almost blank. A tiny square inset into that box held the kanji for 'merits'.

He rubbed at it, thinking he saw a smudge on the card, but then the larger box shifted, black scrolling kanji listing out: "... Battler of the Orochi of Ryugenzawa ... Defeater of the Phoenix-god Saffron in Personal Combat at Phoenix Mountain ... Ally of the Prince of the Musk ..."

"What the hell?" he murmured. "Ally?" He shook his head, setting the card down, watching the scrolling text blank out and revert into the 'merit' button. He'd read the rest once he felt like he needed to fuel a Mouko Takabisha. Still, that clinched it in his mind; pressing the seal in the corner probably did something, too.

He flipped the card over, and saw a pattern etched and engraved there. He wasn't certain what it meant, but it looked like a series of concentric circles of varying sizes in different places, with lines radiating from the approximate centers of these circles to shoot out seemingly at random. Looking at the lines, he came to the conclusion that it had to have some meaning, even if he couldn't decipher it. He knew there was a logic to the noise, but he couldn't quite puzzle it out, only recognize that it was there.

"Huh," he murmured, flipping the card back over. "Not going to learn more just by looking at it," he deduced.

Now, time to press that seal. After all, the 'merit' button just made text scroll. What could possibly go wrong?
