Shadows of Passion: The laws of a broken world [Episode 145018]

by Sgt. Chibi De`Ohki

As it turned out, being sexist can work against you when you're struck with a virus that affects one gender more than the other. There were, at a guess, 6% of the original highest-ranking members of the male government still cognizant and reasonable.

The rest were hospitalized, and a government can't run at 6%. Luckily, the system had a number of failsafes. Unfortunately, so many of these were called upon that even though every role would be filled, it was often by women who weren't familiar with the duties they needed to perform.

Oh, in a week or so, once they'd gotten settled down and could think straight, they'd fix everything. But for the moment, near-hysteria was the order of the day. A new law had just been passed, before the government shut down until the next morning.

This law stated that due to the ratio of men to women, men could have up to five wives. They also decided that in order to keep this new family structure stable, one woman would need to have more legal power than the others; this would be the first wife, and the others well.... The women making the laws knew where they would stand and could fix that later.

There were other ratifications and modifiers to the entire thing, but what it ultimately boiled down to was that the manhunt was on. Not much was needed to process a marriage anymore -- the man was spared the trouble of attending a ceremony. Or dressing nicely. Or dating. Or agreeing to be wed. Or even knowing that he was married!

Yes, things were about to get a lot messier....
