Jack looked at the small black crystal in his hand. "False lead huh?"
"Well, in terms of the main problem we're studying, yes. But it's one with incredible potential ramifications. This was a prototype translating device, that the Ancients built as a way of copying a trick the Juna were able to do using some unique aspect of their own universe." Daniel explained.
"Juna?" Jack asked as he looked up from the crystal.
"Well, it might have been pronounced Yhuna, or Chuma, but I'm pretty sure it was Juna." He looked at Jack. "They were the species the Ancients contacted in another universe."
"Oh." Jack nodded. "And the Ancients . . . enjoyed copying their tricks?"
"One set of notes talks about an Ancient traveling to their world. He claims to have seen them reshape mountains just by waving their arms, restore someone back to life after they had been reduced to ash, and create artificial suns for one particular planet."
"Impressive." Jack responded.
"Well, the really impressive thing is that they were able to do it all without anything the Ancients would consider technology, they were . . . Manipulating the unique properties of their home universe."
Jack looked over Samantha Carter's shoulder as she typed away at the computer. "So, how long will the gate be off-line?" he asked.
"Hours at most sir." Colonel Carter replied simply. "It's a bit more extensive than our regular maintenance and upgrading schedule, but everything's been fully plotted out." She paused in her typing and looked back at General O'Neill. "Sir, besides allowing interdimensional dialing, the computer upgrades will allow us to dial regular gate coordinates significantly faster."
"Cool. And if someone tries to gate in?"
"That's why I'm updating the backup system to handle that."
A ringing sound echoed in the darkness. With a slight moan Danniel Jackson turned on the light beside his bed, then drew back his hand to rub his eyes briefly. Reaching out again, he picked up his cell phone and flipped it open. "Hello?" he asked in a tired sounding voice.
"Doctor Jackson? I think I've found what you were looking for" an excited Russian voice declared. "Ah, I forgot the time difference, did I wake you?"
Danniel sat up in his bed, and grabbed his glasses. "Never mind that," he responded in Russian as he maneuvered his glasses back onto his face. "What have you found!?"
The Russian on the other end of the phone began talking in slow somewhat awkward Ancient.
"The Ancients didn't install the dimension crystals into all the DHD's, but the ones they did install it into they marked with this symbol, below the keypad." With a click of his button, Danniel brought up the image of a triangle with two ancient symbols inside it. "It was apparently a symbol they and the Juna agreed on." He clicked onto the next picture, showing the DHD. "To dial a nine symbol address on the DHD's with the components installed, you just push down on the Home key in the center while pressing the symbols at these three positions," Daniel pointed out three keys, each equidistantly spaced on the outer edge of the keypad. " Then you dial the address. Again, this was Juna inspired. The Juna apparently had a strong attachment to a certain symbol . . ." he brought up the next image.
"Mercedes, right?" Jack commented as he looked at the three-pointed symbol.
". . . similar. The Juna were very into threes."
"Universal wormhole established!" Walter called as he looked up from the screen to the gate, which had just shifted from its normal form to the now familiar extended look of interdimensional gates.
"Excellent." Jack responded. "Is it the right destination?"
" . . . Receiving a transmission, confirmed it is Fire Country!"
A brief surge of cheers rose, dying as General O'Neill raised a hand. "Ok, send the M.A.L.P through!"
On the ramp, the treads started turning as it rolled forward and into the Wormhole. As it crossed the event horizon it's form distorted, seeming to be increasingly compressed as it was drawn into the light and vanished.
"That looked weird." Jack commented, glancing toward where Daniel stood. "Did those books say anything about different side effects of this . . ."
"Um, no I haven't translated anything about the transition itself." Daniel started.
"The M.A.L.P has reached its destination! Receiving telemetry, The vitals on that mouse in the cage are good!"
