That meant that she was rather bored as Akane went to get some hot water, leaving him with Nabiki. Somebody had to get it, and she certainly didn't know her way around the office, no matter how simple the lay out was. It was simply easier to wait, and so that was what she did. She could have spent time talking to Nabiki, but by the grin on the girl's face, it was clear that she was enjoying the fun that she was having. Besides, she just didn't really feel like saying much of anything at all.
Of course, her voice was heard loud and clear as she felt an unusual, yet immediately recognizable, touch upon her shoulder, causing her to turn, see the skull that she'd been expecting, and leap up to grab up onto the nearest tall object that she could get to.
When she looked back, a rather friendly looking man wearing glasses was standing there, holding up a skeleton that was clearly held together by wires.
"Oh, sorry about that," he told her with an apologetic smile. "There's nothing to worry about. This is just my skeleton, Betty. Though, you look just like one of my patients...."
"Doctor Tofu, do you have to do that all the time?" Nabiki demanded, her hand held over her heart.
"I'm sorry, but I just like to get visitors to relax, so...."
"You scare new people and your clients half to death equally?"
"I just get them to get over any fears. Besides, it's fun to do something unexpected, don't you think?"
"Sure... when I am not the one on the receiving end."
Just then, Akane popped over to them, carrying a sizable kettle. "Ranma, here's the hot.... Oh, hello, Doctor Tofu."
"Akane."
"Good morning."
"Good morning to you," the doctor replied, seemingly unaware of how the youngest Tendo put the kettle on the redhead's head as he used his skeleton to return her bow.
At first, Ranma scowled at what Akane had done, but then saw how the girl was looking at the doctor shyly, almost as if she wanted to really look, yet was afraid of seeming too forward.
"You haven't be around for a while. No new injuries?"
"Uhh... no, sir. I mean, I haven't been doing anything that'd...." Akane trailed off.
"Hmmm...." went Ranma as she poured the hot water over herself, turning her back into a guy.
Nabiki smirked at him. "I know what you're thinking."
"Ya do?"
"Uh-huh. I have eyes, you know."
"Then what am I thinking."
"Don't have to say it. But, it's true that she likes to come here, hurt, sick, or perfectly well."
"I see..."
"'See', what?" Akane commented as she came over to the pair after making her goodbyes to the doctor.
"Nothin'. But...."
"What?"
"Who was that?"
"Oh, that was Doctor Tofu, the chiropractor."
"He's a martial arts master too, right?"
"How did you know?"
"I can tell," Ranma murmured, thinking of how easily the doctor had snuck up behind him.
"He is very good, even if it seems that he wouldn't be," the youngest Tendo said softly. "But ever since we were little, he's taken care of us."
"Maybe he can write us a note then," her sister drawled.
"Why would he?"
"Well, we'd need a late excuse, considering the fact that if we lounge around here, we'll never get to school on time."
"Oh, that's right. We have to get to class. Hopefully it won't be too bad."
"What 'won't be'?" Ranma asked.
"You'll see," Nabiki told him with a shrug.
That totally confused Ranma, but something told him that he'd find out soon enough. Because of that feeling, he didn't push the issue, and followed the girls as they headed off to class. What he didn't know was that waiting for Akane was a:
