Yet, the two of them had a special bond which was actually really cute. They tended to blush a lot, and one could tease them for hours about a lot of stuff. No one could doubt that they truly loved each other, as they seemed to be drawn together. She didn't know what it was, but they tended to settle into some sort of... balance around each other.
Not that she was all that bothered by the idea herself. In fact, it was nice to have a friend who she could actually talk seriously too... even if the younger girl tended to make her feel like an idiot at times. Considering the fact that Ami looked a lot like her little sister, that was a bit hard to swallow, but she knew that there was never any desire to do it intentionally. And as much as she needled him, she had great respect for Ranma's strength and experience in the fighting arts.
A part of her wondered if that was why she felt like she had to take care of them.
*"Nabiki? It's good to hear from you,"* came the soft tones of the bookish, yet rather pretty girl.
"It's good to be heard," Nabiki drawled, and let her grin seep into her voice. "And have I got something to tell you...."
From her spot on the couch, Kumori Mizuno wondered about what her daughter was talking to Nabiki Tendo on the phone about. Oh, it wasn't that she was troubled by her only child's relationship with the elder girl. In fact, she rather liked Nabiki, even if the girl was a bit cynical and self interested. She was still a good influence in that she taught her daughter that she could be smart and still have confidence around people.
To be honest though, it had been Usagi Tsukino who had really opened the doors on that. That girl could manage to pry a smile from the most uptight of officials, and seemed to have a knack for making friends. Because of her, Ami was no longer the lonely and isolated girl that she had been, and was now part of a group of real and true friends.
Still, that didn't particularly make the idea of Ami being married any easier to take, especially considering how her own marriage had gone. However, it seemed that having 'artist' be part of his description was all that he had in common with her husband. Besides, it wasn't exactly fair to compare the two males in that way.
Her ex-husband was someone who she had thought would be perfect for her, as they were both dreamers who were dedicated to their callings. The fact that his had been artistic and hers intellectual had seemed to be perfect, since science and imagination had the potential to be two sides of the same coin. Unfortunately, it had turned out that while they were different in their careers, they were too similar in a lot of ways. Oddly enough, both of them being intellectuals meant that they didn't really have much beyond an easy companionship when they did agree, and a certainty that they were 'right' when they were arguing.
On the other hand, Ami's husband was not a lot like her own, and that wasn't just in looks. Nor did he lack in intelligence, although he'd never win any scholarly prizes. But he was very caring and protective of her, and really listened when she explained something. He might not understand it, but he certainly tried. She wasn't sure if he was going to be up to the responsibility of having a wife, any wife, but he did seem to want to try. Making her baby girl be happy was what was important, and she saw that was his foremost desire in relation to Ami, which spoke well of him. And he made her smile.
If nothing else, she was happy about that.
"Mama?" Ami murmured, jolting her mother back to reality.
Kumori glanced up at her only child, and wondered when the phone call had ended. "Yes, dear? Did you have a nice chat with Nabiki?"
"She teased me, but she always does that. And what she had to say was really important."
"Oh? What was it?"
"Ranma is coming back to Tokyo, and his father is planning on taking him to her house."
Hearing that surprised the doctor, who gazed thoughtfully at her daughter, while:
