"What of the human enhancement project?" asked Lorenz Keele of the two standing before him.
"Initial data of the Rei series is going well," said Gendo Rokubungi. "You've seen the report."
"Three of the Rei-Eight series have already ceased functioning," said one of the figures. "Of the remainder, only two show any signs of developing as soul carriers."
"Three?" asked Gendo, knowing of only two deceased units.
"You'll hear the details of the third one officially soon," said Keele, confirming that they had their spies implanted everywhere. "Rokubungi. Do not lose sight of our true goals."
"Human evolution is ongoing," said Gendo. "We have evidence that the human brain continues to develop just within this century. This you know. Look at the data we've uncovered on Ranma Saotome and his father and see what you can make of this."
"Neither is educated well enough to tell us a thing of brain development," said one of the others by radio. "The boy's performance on that written test was less than inspiring."
"It is their physical development which should interest you," said Gendo. "I point out the findings on brain development in addition to these findings simply because of the lack of meaningful data from this Ranma. However, we have other methods of gauging his real intelligence, and not merely his ignorance, that will be available shortly."
Rei's eyes flicked regularly to Ranma.
"You okay, Rei? All healed up?" asked a solicitous Ranma, seeing that she seemed a little slower than usual.
"I am," said Rei, picking up the pace immediately. She'd felt the echo as another of her sisters ended.
Ranma shrugged. Girls. "So, Pop. What are we going to this dojo for?"
Genma chuckled mysteriously. "Boy, something wonderful is about to happen."
"Why is this severely creeping me out?" asked Ranma of Rei.
"Experience," replied Rei to Ranma.
"Ya got something there," said Ranma, smiling and patting her on the shoulder to show his approval. She seemed to like little things like that, which he didn't understand at all himself.
"An old arrangement between families," said Genma. "Myself and Soun Tendo. I was rather surprised when we first came to this world to find that there had been a version of myself and a version of my old friend Soun here. It was the differences that really surprised me."
"Yeah, so you're visiting an old friend?" asked Ranma, thinking it sounded like something more was involved.
"We had both served and trained under a horrible sensei who put us through a nightmare of training. In our own world, I and Soun pledged that you would marry one of Soun's daughters."
"WHAT?!" exclaimed Ranma, predictably.
Rei frowned, not sure why she felt her stomach drop and this storm of feelings. She shoved them aside at the moment though, as Genma was still going on.
"The thing is that in THIS world, it turned out the old Master was fond of raiding slave markets and such," said Genma. "More interesting to me was finding out that old Soun had never had a wife, but a few full-use slavegirls. So things are a little different in that:"
