City Of Crossroads: Ghost Talk [Episode 149693]

by Kender

All it took was a simple step out onto the floor, and Motoko Kusanagi was out amongst the crowds of people, which wasn't something new for her. Walking amongst throngs of people was something that she was used to in the manner of any girl from a major metropolis. She knew all the little tricks and skills that were needed to help someone get quickly through the masses of warm bodies, constant distractions, and all the other parts of the streets of a big city. It was a familiar dance of thousands, and once one found her spot in it, she could see everything about them, even if the faces changed.

"Enjoying having had the chance to talk to her?" came over her cybernetic link.

One of her brows rose slightly. "What are you talking about?"

"Well, you seemed to be very interested in seeing her, even though we decided against choosing her. I thought that there might be something that made you want to meet her."

"Your mind in the gutter, Bateau?"

"About to fall in," he told her unapologetically.

"Save it before you have to save yourself. I wanted to know what she was like."

"Oh?"

"She's a soldier who managed to stay uncorrupted, but not stupid, during a major conspiracy," the Major observed as she walked past people who didn't know that she was holding a conversation, which had an old amusement to her. "There aren't many individuals who could manage that."

"Walking in the rain without getting wet?"

"We could, and still can, if she'll work with us when we need it. But right now, it's not worth putting her into the sorts of things that we could come up against."

"You're right on that. Though it is too bad. She is a looker."

"Mind. Gutter. Out."

"Hey, I can see without being a pig."

"Right. Still, we can come back to her later, if we have to. We do have other choices, after all," she replied in even tones.

"Sure. I mean, just with cops, we have a lot of options. Like if we need a mech pilot, maybe we could try that 'Special Vehicles Unit Two' bunch."

"I hope that you're not serious. There is nothing 'covert' about them."

He chuckled over their connection. "Got me there. But seriously, we've got a chance to make up the sort of team that we want, and can use."

"Which makes it important that we chose the right people."

"So, are you going to come back and help us pick, or are you just going to wander around some. The future waits for no man. Or woman."

"I'll be there straight away."

"See you later then."

"When I get there," she replied, and broke their connection. Looking out at the way that the glittering city was shown out beyond the windows, Motoko saw the future that was ahead of her and her team. She knew that it would not be a simple life, but then, her life had rarely been easy. And she didn't plan on expecting it to be. The place where she was might have changed, but she wasn't going to stop who she was.

She was going to do her duty, making certain that life could be as safe as possible for the people on the street, while:
