Janet stared blankly at the alien. "I'm sorry, but it sounded like you were repeating yourself."
"Words the same, but meaning is not."
"Ah...."
"What is meant is that there are two different levels being talked about," Hugin explained.
"Oh. Then what sort of levels are we talking about?"
"Initially, it seems that the male will unconsciously be psionically encountering the female's mind, and during that time, they will have an opening between them, through which the more stable abilities would manifest."
"I don't quite follow."
"I think that I do," Sam put in. "Think of it this way. You have a river, and you want to cross it. But you can't build the bridge in one shot. So you put the scaffolding up, and use it to build the more solid structure."
"Thus making it a permanent connection."
"So, they'd be waiting for that moment, and if they found someone that they thought would be their 'special one', they'd put out that base thing, and then put that 'hard' connection in."
Hugin nodded approvingly. "You understand."
"Told you that stupid, they were not," Freke muttered.
"In any case, that is why they look for only a 'special one', as it would take an individual who would not mind such a connection with that particular male."
"But what sort of level are we talking about?" Carter asked.
"Did we not describe this earlier?"
"I don't mean that. I mean, could we just be facing a total psychic connection, where one just has to think for the other to hear, or are we talking about merely sensing how the other is feeling?"
"Hmmm... Well, it would likely depend on the individuals involved, as they are the ones who would affect it. With so many powers involved, it could change the psychic levels from low to high. As it is, the only definite is that the strain would be lessened with the support that their partner would bring."
"Since we don't have the enhancements, we don't have the loads they do, and so we don't have any other burdens on us."
"Exactly."
"Which makes women possibly something majorly needed in a whole new way," Janet sighed, and Sam nodded sadly, while:
