Finding Ranma collapsed at his doorway was concerning. Whatever his origins, he had become her son as far as her heart was concerned. While he was a bit muleheaded and stubborn and definitely independent - they had become family. She had to get Ami's help in carrying him off to bed, and thereafter was monitoring his condition while Ami fretted and seemed to be struggling with some decision.
Temperature and heartrate were up. Blood pressure was high for Ranma but within acceptable parameters. The muscles writhing under his skin was more concerning.
"This reminds me of the time he was learning those chi techniques," said the doctor finally. "I hadn't heard of him being challenged though. Why would he feel the need to learn some new style?"
Ami remained silent, though it was clear she knew something. At least it was obvious if one were her mother.
"Some sort of wound here," noticed the physician, checking his right arm. "The area is fairly swollen and looks discolored to me. Small puncture there. Perhaps a dart or needle? Possibly poisoned?"
Ami fidgeted in the background.
The physician interpreted this in terms she was familiar with, based on her knowledge of previous events. Ami had gotten challenged or bullied, Ranma had come to her rescue, new martial artist beats him, Ranma goes off to train, rival ambushes him. It had happened once or twice before. This time it was a poisoned needle or something. Without a sample of the poison though, treating it would be difficult. She made a call.
Less than an hour later, an orderly from the hospital she worked at was off again with blood and tissue samples. Though Ranma seemed to be fighting it off on his own, best to know exactly what poison was being used.
Checking Ranma's vitals again, his mother determined that his temperature was back down almost to normal. Heart rate was strong. Blood pressure within normal values. However his muscle density seemed to have increased. Obviously whatever new technique he'd learned was allowing him to throw off the poison.
"At least you don't go off doing things to make me worry," said Doctor Mizuno to her other child.
Ami gave a weak smile at the remark, and went off to go call up her friends for something.
Checking again, the physician was surprised to see the wound and swelling had a faint glow pass over them before they disappeared entirely. From what little she knew of it, that meant his chi healing was at work but she'd never seen it work this quickly before. Last time she'd seen something like that, it had been a twelve centimeter slash and it had taken him several hours of meditation to heal it. While this was a smaller injury, it had been nearly instantaneous.
Something was apparently going on with his chi, but what?
