Spider-Ken: Spinning A Past [Episode 151083]

by Kestral

Ami used the Mercury Computer after her mother had closed the door to Ranma's room.

She'd known for years that SOMETHING was different about her brother, something her mother wouldn't talk about. Something that apparently involved those books on the occult that her mother would pick up every so often.

Now apparently her dim-witted if lovable brother had gotten involved in something else, this time due to her own involvement with magic, and had gotten in over his head. According to these readings, her mother had that pocket tape recorder out again.

More - her mother had left her room's door ajar. After all these years, Ami could see what secrets were hidden there.

A few books on the occult were mixed in with the medical texts and reference books on the nightstand. Seeing one had a flag up, she flipped it open to that page. A passage was highlighted, which startled Ami as she couldn't picture her mother defacing books in such a manner.

"Among these other legends within the Tilmuk tribe is of the Child Who Wasn't which strangely echoes within some Japanese and European myths despite a lack of contact between such groups during the times such tales were told. The orphaned or abandoned child is found, taken in, and one of two things generally occurs. Either the child turns out to be a monster/ghost that is devouring the unwary, or (rarer case) the child turns out to be the one capable of fighting a similar menace or disaster later.

This is different from the earlier mentioned tales of changelings, European faerie tales of children stolen away with a fae-born creature left behind in its place. In these cases there are no mentions of an exchange, nor is there any mention of a society or kingdom involved."

"Ranma's ability to heal has been astonishing over the years," said Doctor Mizuno into her pocket recorder. "This attack is similar to that poison needle incident a few years ago, but if anything this was more potent and concentrated. Whatever it was, his body is fighting it off though I would expect others without his origins and odd abilities to fare considerably less well.

"The poisoned needle, from a practitioner of Dirty Tricks Martial Arts, was a fast-acting neurotoxin. After Ranma defeated him, I had to give testimony during the prosecution of that individual, and the last I'd heard of the case - he was most likely going to be hanged for similar incidents. It's possible that another member of the same 'school' came after Ranma for revenge. Since his body is fighting off the poison, and his own genetic code is similar to my own, I believe I can fashion an antitoxin from prepared samples that I drew at the same time that I drew the samples for the lab."

The doctor cracked open the door, made sure that Ami was nowhere near, and then closed the door again to continue.

"I have determined that Ranma's origins continue to influence his development, though there may be other factors at work. A necklace I picked up some years ago is supposed to indicate supernatural influences on an individual, but it has reacted to myself in a minor way, but both Ranma and Ami have gotten major reactions.

"Further research is difficult with my schedule, but it is possible that this 'chi' spoken of in martial arts movies and texts is similar to magic or supernatural influence. Perhaps in the way that visible light is similar to radio waves. Experimentation is difficult in this regard, though Ranma has unknowingly assisted me a few times when I'm running various tests."

"Nnnng," said Ranma.

The doctor tended to her patient, practiced hands checking signs and symptoms quickly and efficiently.

"Ami in danger, gotta help," mumbled Ranma.

Naturally, this drew the doctor's attention.
