AIM had sought to recreate the conditions that had created a superhero, though each time they'd tried it so far all they'd managed to do was kill the test subject.
The universe enjoyed irony. Akane would be the first one to actually be counted a success in this attempt.
This wasn't immediately apparent to Akane, all she knew was the clatter from the radiation counters, the flare of light and feelings of heat. Then she was on all fours on the ground, dealing with nausea and weakness.
What happened as she crawled away from the experiment, shortly before it exploded in a shower of sparks and broken parts, was that she was already on the way to becoming a superheroine much like:
