Akane walked the streets of the city, looking around her but not really registering her surroundings. She'd always thought of herself as the best of the best, but there were a few dojo around here which were close to or at her own level of accomplishment.
She had to thank Ranma Mizuno for that much at least. Not only did she now know there were monsters out there, she was out gaining experience in the Art that she might not have gotten from sticking to one little area of Japan.
There were apparently others out there as well. She'd crossed Ranma's path a few times, and there were others taking the path of challenging dojo in order to perfect their own style.
Some of the techniques, like that "Evil Cutting Sword" had seemed really intriguing. Unfortunately, that school was closed to outsiders as a few were. You could challenge them, you could test yourself against them, but you could not join them.
She wondered if she'd run into Ranma again. That he was apparently looking here in this very area meant that was possible, and perhaps she could compare notes with him.
Akane startled at the sudden noise and felt the ground shake slightly, causing her to shake off her reverie.
When she ran around the corner it was to see a large sprawling three-story building on fire. Gouts of flame coming out of the third story, changing to smoke as she watched.
Then, also while watching, she saw someone familiar go rushing in.
"Oh heck," said Akane, realizing what he was doing. Going in to see if anyone needed rescuing. Well, two could cover more ground than one.
She was halfway down the street when vans pulled up and people in odd yellow uniforms went rushing in, carrying RIFLES?!
Akane nearly turned and went back the other way, but realized that Ranma was still in there. She respected his fighting prowess, but someone had to warn him.
Finding a window that had blown out, Akane slipped over the sill - trying to make as little noise as possible.
The building shuddered, the lights flickered, and:
