Anime 40,000: Cowboy Bebop [Episode 152454]

by Jumper Prime

The Gatya system was significant in that it had an above average number of habitable bodies orbiting its star. Before humans first came to the system in the Dark Age of Technology, there was only one habitable planet. Then the humans terraformed several planets, as well as the moons of several gas giants. The planets had weathered the Age of Strife quite well, the first ship encountered by the Emperor when his fleet reached Gatya at the dawn of the Imperium had been an interplanetary cargo ship. The details of how the Emperor brought the system under his control are unimportant, suffice to say that the planets of the Gatya system have been loyal members of the Imperium ever since. Our story begins in the space between planets aboard a privately owned ship known as the Bebop. The Bebop’s trade was not the carrying of cargo, or passengers, or messages, nor was it a police vessel. The Bebop was a bounty hunter’s ship, flying from planet to planet in the pursuit of various criminals with good-sized prices on their heads. Jet Black was the owner and captain of the Bebop, but he was not the only person who traveled on the ship, he had a partner, one Spike Spiegel, with whom he worked with on various bounty hunts.

“Spike, you in here?” Jet called out as he walked into the Bebop’s living room

“Yo.” Spike answered from the couch as he lit a cigarette

“Spike, there’s something I want to talk to you about.”

“Is this about the property damage when I took down that last bounty on Zezo?” Spike blew out some smoke

“No, I already chewed you out about that. Paying for the damage used up half the money we got for that guy. But that’s not what this is about. It’s… Well, it’s about Ed.”

“What about her?”

“Have you noticed anything… odd about her?”

“Jet, this is Ed we’re talking about. She’s always odd.”

“That’s not what I mean.” Jet sighed, rubbing his forehead with his mechanical hand “I mean… Oh I’ll just come out and say it. Spike, I’m not sure, but I think Ed might be a Psyker.”

“So?”

“SO!?! You dumbass. You know the law. Psykers have to be reported and if we don’t report her and somebody finds out, we’ll be in deep trouble.”

“Jet, you know what the Imperium does to Psykers. They’re never gonna believe she can resist a Daemon. They’ll either kill her outright or feed her to the Emperor. You really want that to happen?”

“She acts weird, but she’s a good kid. I don’t think a Daemon would know what to do with her anymore than we do.”

“OK, so let’s say for a sec they don’t kill her outright or feed her to the Emperor. What if they make her an Astropath? You know what that means, she’ll go blind, maybe deaf too. She’d never be able to hack again and you know how much she enjoys tapping away on her computer.”

“Well, maybe they won’t pick her for an Astropath. Do you really think anyone would trust her with an interstellar message? Maybe they’d just put her to work helping maintain the Astronomican? That’s nice and safe and she’d be doing something important to the whole galaxy.”

“Except for one little problem. I heard the Astronomican is powered by human lifeforce, that hundreds of Psykers die every day to power it.”

“You sure that’s not just a rumor? I never heard anything like that before.”

“It’s what I heard. Thanks, by the way.”

“Thanks?” Jet blinked “For what?”

“For implicating me. If Ed really is a Psyker and anyone ever does find out, my deniability just went out the window.”
