Pokeboys: Available Materials [Episode 152816]

by Kender

Once he woke up, Ranma was going to also discover fairly quickly that this world was actually not Earth. A starship away team composed of females crashed here centuries ago. Mongrel cloning produced only female copies, so a male "placeholder" was developed. That wasn't to say that male humans couldn't be 'created', as there were ways to get around those particular difficulties. However, it was quite honestly impossible for one simple reason.

None of those who had survived had any real knowledge of how to manipulate the genetic technologies that they had brought with them.

The thing was that the pods used for that sort of reproduction had long been long since 'idiot proofed'. The idea had been that the ones who would want to use them would simply want to continue onwards with the most basic sorts of results. It wasn't like anyone was going to want to create any sort of variations to the species. After all, that was what laboratories were supposed to be for. And there was little to no desire to give any planet its own way of genetically engineering monsters that would kill them, those who might come across their world, or those who those monsters would get off world to see.

It wasn't like anyone would ever have an emergency reason to clone anything, as that would simply be irresponsible. Should someone have crash landed, they would only have to activate their 'S.O.S' beacon, and wait for help. Cloning anything on a world that one wasn't going to be able to stay on would simply silly, as that would condemn the clone to the same fate as the 'original'.

The concepts had been done by committees that didn't have much in the way of any actual experience in such matters, believed in their own 'common sense', and had a lot of worries about theories of possible threats more than immediate concerns.

That didn't much help the crew of the 'Demeter' though, as those individuals sitting in comfortable chairs at a nice table hadn't envisioned a ship crashing onto a world without any male survivors. Nor had they considered the possibility that the usually safe beacon would be freed from the ship by one of the many impacts, and sent shooting off to land where the crew could not get to it. And they certainly hadn't thought it possible that no one with any real experience in genetics would survive.

So, the crew had done what they could. They took the equipment that they had salvaged, used the abilities of the low level techs who at least knew how to use the pods with their current settings, and made their own genetic structures available. That, at least, would mean that there would be human beings for some time yet.

However, there would be no males, since no one had been trained in the use of them, and it did take some high level skills to manipulate the devices. As a result, they did the next best thing that they had available. They made 'placeholders' by using:
